Liverpool vs. Villa: All my rowdy friends are here on Monday…day

Friedel: That bald dome is menacing

Friedel: That bald dome is menacing

ESPN stepping up and showing my boys Liverpool versus the midlands club Aston Villa. I’m going to go do my best to give you live commentary.

American and former Liverpool keeper Brad Friedel is in goal for the Villians. He usually has very good games against his former club, hopefully not tonight.

By the way, to all the naysayers who say football is for wimps, tell them this, that Curtis Davies for Villa is playing with a dislocated shoulder and Skrtel is playing with a broken jaw.

After the jump, skip to the bottom to read along with the game flow (spoiler alert!, if you focus on the top of the post)

———

Woeful by Liverpool. Didn’t deserve to win this game at all. Hopefully this will be a kick in the pants that they need…but is it too late? I’m too depressed to write anymore.

GAME OVER… Liverpool 1 – Aston Villa 3

Liverpool giving up..horrible

89: Two great saves by Friedel…He’s having a great game

86: Liverpool going from bad to worse right now. Villa sensing it, have turned up the pace and finally are playing decent football

83: Babel shoots…nothing from it…at least he’s doing something. Liverpool playing better…they should since their season is already slipping away from them after three games. I really want to swear right now…need to talk to the brothers to see if i can do that.

80. Great save by Friedel…BAH

79: Heskey on for Villa. Penalty shout for Liverpool. Not a penalty but no way Beye was going for the ball. That would be a foul anywhere else on the pitch

Young scores….THIS SUCKS…Liverpool are playing so badly. The worst i’ve seen in years and now Babel is on and Benayoun is off. Hopefully Babel can do something because usually he is terrible and without any passion and devoid of creativity…i’m being nice too.

74: Gerrard makes a TERRIBLE tackle and conceeds a penalty

Liverpool 1 – Villa 2

72: GOAL TORRES…lovely passing…Voronin, Beneyoun and Torres finishes it off… HERE WE GO…18 minutes left!

69: Gerrard sends a cannon of a shot that almost takes Friedels arms off but the big American keeper is up for the task and saves well

Lets hope the Ukrainian International can make an impact. He did for Hertha Berlin last year…C’MON YOU REDS

65: Liverpool get a penalty shout and but it really wasn’t. Sub: Lucus off…Voronin in.

60: Torres dispossess a Villa defender but dribbles the ball away. He has been atrocious this game…

Liverpool playing much better now. Why the EFFFF did they not start like this…IDIOTS

nope…and Villa counterattack and almost score…i would have cried if they had

58: 3 corners in 2 minutes….third time the charm?

57: Ball in Villa half. Corner for liverpool and a good header by Kuyt which Freidel saves well

55: Liverpool pressuring a little more now and Villa resorting to fouling. Freekick is a good one but Friedel makes a great punch clear.

54: Foul on Torres by Reo Coker. Comes to nothing…getting tired of writing that

49: Gerrard with a terrible pass. He’s having an awful game…then again everyone in red is. Villa seem to be playing with a renewed energy.

46: Gerrard with a great shot after a nice mazy run by johnson. GREAT save by Friedel….bastard ;)

This is will be quite the comeback if they can do it…

Second half about to begin. Hopefully the lads are up for it

Looking at replay…ball did go of Skrtel and Ref was correct to add that extra time due to Reina’s stupid antics. I was wrong, Just very angry right now.

Liverpool are ruining their and my season right now. They played that half with no drive or passion. Villa wern’t much better but they are up by two and somewhat deservedly so.

WOW… 2-0 to villa from a corner kick that should never have happened. Refs messing this up in that goal should never have happened as it was way past regular time. That said Liverpool are terrible. Half time

1 minute of added time

Both teams playing atrocious football

41: Villa gets another freekick in the same position that they scored from. Ball hits the wall

40: Friedel called into action to save a very weak shot by Mascherano. Liverpool are just woeful this half

37: Liverpool doing absolutely nothing with all the possession they are getting…and just as i write that Torres fires in a shot after a penetrating Johnson run (heh). Ensuing corner comes to nothing.

33. GOAL…Lucky deflection from Ashley Young as Lucus just heads into his own goal…UGH…poor guy. Trying so hard but was completely responsible for that goal. Ok lads…step up

Sloppy play from Liverpool leads to a Villa breakaway and Lucus on cue fouls someone. I like Lucus and think he has potential and also think he has gotten some unfair criticism but he’s not having a good game so far.

That's right ladies: T-O-R-R-E-S

That's right ladies: T-O-R-R-E-S

30: Gerrard looks disinterested as do some of the other Liverpool players. Johnson having a quiet game too. Sidwell just mugs Torres whose black eye must not help with the ladies….or does it?

29: Sloppy play all around from both teams. I think everyone on the pitch could do with a can of Red Bull at halftime

Also a shout out to ESPN’s choice of commentators who can pronounce complicated Greek names with a glorious ease

HD is fantastic. Skrtel has the sort of face that would make babies cry.

25: Liverpool get a break but some lucky defending from Villa gets the ball easily to Friedel

Crowd is unusually quiet for Anfield

20: Slow game. Liverpool are pretty much controlling the game but not much is coming off it. We need a goal or this might turn into a bore draw.

18: Lucus fouled Petrov…gets a talking to from the ref. Right call. Other refs would have reached for card but Martin Atkinson has a cooler head.

15: Free kick for Villa which Carragher heads clear. That has to hurt (Carragher has several stitches in his head from the opening day clash with Skrtel’s jaw.)

12: Kuyt fouled. Gerrard takes a free kick. Half chance for Lucus. Liverpool are creating chances but not finishing. Hopefully they won’t rue those misses.

9: WOW… there were about 4 simple chances in one attacking play. It was like a circus of missed volleys and bad keepy uppy…Liverpool get a corner out of it somehow…that was ridiculous…it was like kindergarten football…corner was wasted.

7: Villa already wasting time… Both teams seem content with a slow pace. Wow half the Liverpool players are stitched up or broken. Agbonlahor sends Skrtel and his broken jaw crashing in the side advertising…no foul but a corner for Villa which comes to nothing

5 minutes: Game in a bit of a lull… sigh…

2 minutes: Freekick onthe edge of the box for Liverpool. All the tall boys in the box…Friedel punches clear

1 minute: Benayoun almost heads in a goal…LOVE THIS player. He is very underrated

Brutal. I got up at 4 this morning so I could make a drive up to Wisconsin in time to catch the game. Wishing I had slept in now.

Completely agree with you on Benayoun though, very underrated guy.

I’d like to think it will help to get some of the injured guys back, Agger, Aquilani and such but I’m not convinced it won’t be too little too late.

C’Mon now Liverpool, get it together.

I think it’s time for that feature piece on Alonso. Didn’t see the game today, but watched the troubling effort against Tottenham last weekend.

That defense was airtight at the beginning of last season. Does Agger really have that impact?

Aqualani is the big time midfield signing. I don’t know anything about him other than what I’ve seen on LFC TV but he should be pretty solid. They also just picked up a Greek international center back, Sotirios Kyrgiakos, who should be ready this week or next. I’m not sure if he will replace Skrtel or whether they will split time, but he is supposed to be a very high quality and experienced player. Agger will definitely help on one of the wings, but I’m not sure how much PT he will see since Insua and Johnson seem to be playing quite well. Liverpool this season has shown a lot of inconsistency. They were on fire versus Stoke and during the second half of the match with Villa, but they were piss poor against Spurs and in the first half today. I’m hoping that getting a couple of guys healthy will be the change we need (Aurelio, Aqualani, Agger, etc.). I’m also hoping to see a bit more of Riera. He played outstanding in the preseason. I’d also like to see Krisztián Németh get some caps at some point up front. We need another scoring threat besides Torres.

Not real happy right now, but this is also the first time I’ve ever watched L’pool in HD, so I guess it is a mixed bag. You can’t win or lose it in August, so we’re still okay if we get our shit together.

Agger is a good central defender and ultimately will replace Carragher. He’s got a decent shot (scored winner in semi against Chelsea in his first year). Aquilani will help a lot if he can stay healthy. My main issue today is that they didn’t really seem and try nor care until mid second half. There was no passion or heart. That said i do find that Reira not playing is weird. he was injured for the first game but he had a great pre season and should be back.

The team that was out there is a very good team but they couldn’t string passes together consistently and just made some basic errors. They were off, almost like they were all a little hungover.

That said Man U were very slow out of the gate last year and look what they did. I think the likes of Man city, Villa, Spurs etc…will take points of all the big four and that its going to be a very interesting season. Lets just hope Liverpool can get their act together by next game.

You really think Carra is on his way out? He is one of the top centre backs in the league. When Agger comes back, we will have one of the deepest back lines in the league (Agger, Carra, Skrtel, Kyrgiakos). I think our defence is the least of our worries. The midfield play is what we really need to be concerned with. I agree it is very odd that Riera hasn’t seen a lick of time so far. He played great in the preseason matches I watched. I’m not too concerned because there are a ton of injured players right now, but LFC needs to do something so that they don’t get off to these slow starts. They played outstanding in the second forty-five, but were downright awful in the first half.

Did anyone else notice that ESPN advertised the Chelsea/Burnley Saturday game at noon (e.g. we were watching the same thing those in the UK were watching)? They also showed another overlay advertising a Celtic/Hibernian SPL match on Sunday… I was really excited until I realized that wasn’t for us poor American folk… :( Damn you ESPN for getting my hopes up. Oh well, now I will know not to trust the advertisements during the broadcasts.

  7. I am really surprised that Leiva is still starting. I know it is en vogue to bash him right now but seriously, is he really EPL material? Besides being undersized by EPL standards, he just doesn’t seem to have the intestinal fortitude or the skills necessary to contribute much in the midfield. Just my opinion. Also, I am really surprised that Rafa would buy a player already injured to replace Alonso when Leiva was his only cover at this position. I am seriously questioning Rafa’s judgement at this point. What do you think Matthew?

Matthew – The SPL match is not for American folk? I assumed it was…DAMN.

Jarrod – I too am surprised that Leiva is starting. I’m assuming its because 1. Benitez see’s something that we don’t and 2. Benitez is very stubborn.

I remember when Carragher first came on the scene. He was midfielder but more of a defensive one and then got switched to right back and eventually settled at left back. He was good but also was prone to lots of mistakes. I think he had 3-4 in his first two years and the fans though loved him for being local, got on his case a lot in a similar way that Lucus is. Now look at him. I believe that he is one of the top 2 center backs in the league (Matthew – i meant earlier that Agger will eventually replace Jamie, as he is still superb but getting on a bit and has a lost a step. I feel he has two great years left in him).

Benitez is also very stubborn (his devotion to Kewell being a prime example). I think the best solution till Aqualani comes on, is to do what they did at the end of the game yesterday with Gerrard dropping back and give Voronin or Nemeth or Ngog a decent run as a second striker. Even put Benayoun behind Torres (if you don’t have faith in Voronin) and have Reira take Yossi’s current position. Benayoun plays best behind the striker anyways and Reira is a better winger. When Aqualani comes back, then you have a bit of a selection nightmare but that’s not a bad thing.

      What do you guys think?

I think you hit the nail on the head. Lucas has never shown what it is that Rafa sees in him. Drop Gerrard back and take him from an attacking midfield role to a more pass-oriented midfielder (he can make the long passes that Lucas can’t– well let me rephrase, he makes the passes that Lucas might not see). I was very impressed with Riera in the preseason and I am still very bummed that he has not seen a minute yet. I am a big Benayoun fan, but I don’t know if the left side is right for him. After all, he is right footed and tends to cut inside rather than stretch the field. Riera is naturally left footed and seems much better suited (although Insua/Johnson have been very aggressive on both sides of the field this year so I wonder if we even need to worry about our midfielder’s ability to stretch the width of the field). A lot of people hate on Voronin, but I like the guy. He has a naturally ability to be in the right place at the right time even if he isn’t skilled enough to always make that ambitious pass or strong finish. I would love to see a second striker, at least until Aqualani is ready to play. Ngog looked great in preseason as well. I like Torres, but he has a questionable first touch some times (and then at other times he will just blow your mind at how amazing he can be!). I think dropping Stevie G deeper and playing two dedicated strikers will do wonders for us until Aqualani is ready. I would also like to see Mascherano get more involved in the offence. If anyone has the ability to replace Alonso, I really think it might be Mascherano, not Gerrard. I’ve never seen him play as well as he has the last year or so.

I dunno… I’m rambling. Everything is going to be fine though :)

  8. Check out the Aquilani post on my website Matthew. I wouldn’t bet on Aquilani being in the lineup every game even after he gets over this current injury.
