From 10/10: We are up to 37 locations broadcasting the game in English as of Friday morning.
From 10/02: We received an email from our contact at the rights holder who said that the list on CopaTVOnline represents only the English broadcasts and that they will be “updating the list on an on-going basis.” For Spanish viewing locations, and there are many, you can go to Circuitocerrado.tv.
(Here is the most current list of Spanish telecast carriers, pulled out from that web site)
The below is the revised list of confirmed establishments who have contracted for the English telecast:
- Chicago – Small Bar
Location: 2049 West Division
Yelp Rating: 4 Stars
Pros: Great bar owner who is a passionate soccer fan, located in the Ukranian Village neighborhood - San Diego – O’Brien’s Pub
Location: 4646 Convoy St.
Yelp Rating: 4 Stars
Pros: It’s in San Diego!, Official US Soccer Bar, you will watch the game with Mark of TSG
Cons: None – it’s in San Diego!
Extras: Just had a conversation with Tom at O’Brien’s. He assured me it will be a 100% US crowd. The pub has 20 taps of local and craft beers, 120+ “fine bottled beers” (ONE HUNDRED AND TWENTY!) and great “pub grub”. No cover, but a $15 food / drink min. (Alright, I’ll say it, I’m stoked to go there!) - San Francisco – Danny Coyles
Location: 668 Haight St.
Yelp Rating: 3.5 Stars
Pros: I hear the Bay Area is nice this time of year
Cons: You will watch the game with Matthew of TSG (Can you guess which brother is writing this update?)
Matt from TSG: As I posted in the comments, my buddy Matty King throws his holiday red-n-slutty party here each year and it’s a great time. Good beers on tap, just the right amount of darkness, good soccer crowd and HDTV. Love it. - Albany – Wolff’s Biergarten
Location: 895 Broadway (Yelp lists 885, but they are wrong)
Yelp Rating: 4 Stars
Pros: Upstate NY in the fall, 14 German, Czech and Belgian biers on tap including the Spaten Optimator (7.2% ABV)
Cons: Looking at their website the place looks great, so I’ll go with…watching the game with a bunch of politicos from the New York State capital - New York – Madison Square Garden, Play By Play Sports Bar
Location: Four Pennsylvania Plaza
Yelp Rating: 4 Stars (only one review)
Pros: Located in the greatest city in history of the solar system (Matthew and I are from NY), has pictures of famous New York Knicks and Rangers (though hopefully not the one of MJ dunking on Patrick from the baseline)
Cons: $20 ticketed event
Extras: MSG is looking to make some money off this so they are billing it as a “Viewing Party” hosted by former Cosmos star Shep Messing - Atlanta – Fado Irish Pub
Location: 273 Buckhead Ave.
Yelp Rating: 4 Stars - Chicago – Fado Irish Pub
Location: 100 West Grand Ave

On a separate and un-related note, my buddy Matty Kind holds his holiday red-n-slutty party at Danny Coyles — it’s a pretty small place relatively speaking, does have HDTV and a pretty good beer selection.
Posted by kaya on 2009/10/01 at 4:03 PM
I think we should go crash the party at Rocapulco =)
Posted by matthewsf on 2009/10/06 at 7:08 PM
@Kaya — we’re looking to be at Danny Coyles for sure now if you want to drop by.
Posted by kaya on 2009/10/08 at 11:59 AM
Any idea how much it’s going to cost to get in?
I’m a little worried about space; I simply can’t get there earlier than 5:45 and I want to be able to see for $20 cover charge… at least Rocapulco is huge. I just hope the crowd would be nice when I start dancing when we score :-p
Posted by matthewsf on 2009/10/08 at 12:03 PM
@Kaya — says it will be packed by 6:30 for sure — not sure the cost, but they will be showing games all day if you want to drop by.
I would imagine with a few beers and cheers in you, you may stand a good chance of a throwdown at Rocapulco — which may be comical in and of itself.
Coyles is in the Lower Haight relatively close to me so I’m grabbing a wild boar dog over at Rosamunde and then heading over around 5:30.

OK, I guess I will know who you are when I see guys sporting body paint?
Posted by Nevin on 2009/10/08 at 5:02 PM
This looks like as good an excuse as any for a trip to the city on Sat. Besides, somebody’s gotta represent East Bay.
Posted by Berg on 2009/10/01 at 10:50 AM
Brutal. Looks like a trip to Chicago may be in order. I can’t believe this mess of trying to track down the game with qualification on the line.
Thanks for the updates, guys. Hopefully they expand the bar network in the coming week and a half.
Posted by matthewsf on 2009/10/01 at 11:00 AM
What I am amazed at is the economics may be good enough just to target Spanish-speaking locales. I imagine the English-speaking bar list will increase, but perhaps not drastically.
If you’re FIFA, I know you’ve got a lot to do, but seriously how do you know just call this a mess and not do something about it next time.
Posted by i like tuesday on 2009/10/01 at 11:20 AM
Well gentleman, the good news is that the match will be en vivo en espanol just down the street at local el salvadorean restaurant LA ESMERALDA right here in Old Town Alexandria. The venue isn’t much to be honest, and I’ve not seen a hint of a television so I think we’ll all be watching on a single 14″ B&W television.
I’m not as worried about English commentary which is usually abysmal unless you’re playing the “Harkes slags Dempsey” drinking game. I’m worried whether I’ll find a welcoming atmosphere warmer than a plastic cup filled with fresh urine. We’re going to find out a week on Saturday.
Posted by i like tuesday on 2009/10/06 at 9:45 AM
Since my wife says I’m not allowed to be that Gringo, I think I’ll just catch the game at Summers.
Posted by MG3 on 2009/10/01 at 11:30 AM
Word on the street from AO Charlotte is that the game will be shown in the Queen City at Don Pedro Mexican Restaurant for $20/person.
It would make feel less uneasy if Don Pedro would appear on the list for the Spanish speaking bars.

The Sweetwater in St. Paul is a pretty nice place to catch a game, lots of TVs, knowledgeable crowd, old guy who called Conor Casey half retarded (http://freebeermovement.blogspot.com/2009/09/free-beer-hangover.html#comments), etc.
Just make sure you ask the bartender for the 2-for-1 beer special.

——————————————————————————–
It is now confirmed:
What: US v Honduras Closed Circuit Viewing Location
Where: The OCP – Across from the HDC, behind the KFC
When: Saturday October 10 @ 7:00 PM
This is by far the cheapest place you will be able to watch the US v Honduras game in LA. Other places, such as La Cieba in Long Beach are planning on charging $40. The OCP will only be charging $15.
But that’s not all!
Each person who pays the entrance fee will be given a Free ticket to next LA Galaxy home game Saturday October 24th against the Galaxy’s old rival the San Jose Smurfquakes.
But wait, there’s more!
Each person will get 1 free Beer!
That’s one Free ticket, valued at $25 + 1 Free Beer a $5 value + You get to watch the US v Honduras at the ONLY place in LA that will be showing the game broadcast in English.

Will the game be streamed live on ESPN Soccernet?? I’ve watched other matches that way and it’s super convenient. Anyone know?
Posted by matthewsf on 2009/10/08 at 11:31 AM
Not a chance — no Internet rights have been brokered as far as we know. For a fact, there is nothing in place on either the television or Internet side with ESPN.

Sure you can’t watch the game in Saint Paul, drive up on a coffee binge, and turn up at the church with 30 seconds to spare and wired like crazy, still wearing your USA gear?
..nah, I got ya, family’s important too.
Posted by Nick on 2009/10/08 at 3:36 PM
I tried that one already, unfortunately there’s some shenanigannery going on with the in-laws so we have to be up there Saturday night. I would love to go back to the Sweetwater (watched the T&T game there), it’s nice meeting like minded individuals when you move to a new area, and they have a pretty good Extra Pale Ale on tap there too.

Posted by Kevin on 2009/10/10 at 7:48 AM
I would, but I don’t think its a good idea going to Pizza Hut park to watch the game because they’ll probably be promoting FC Dallas and I’ll see lots of people wearing FC Dallas gear, where as the only soccer gear I have to wear would be my Dynamo jersey. Dynamo and FCD don’t rlly get along.

Ian is correct the Queen City Outlaws will be hosting a viewing party at Connolly’s in Charlotte. All are welcome and bring friends.
It was never confirmed that Don Pedro was showing the match in Charlotte and if they do it will be in Spanish.

Do they allow under 21′s
Posted by Kevin on 2009/10/10 at 10:02 AM
I hope ESPN can atleast re-run the game. Not live. I don’t know maybe they could do that because I don’t even care if I’m watching the game live or if I know what has happened I want to watch the game. Personally, I like Goltv more and that’s cuz ESPN doesn’t care very much about soccer at all. Goltv has good commentary too, but they never get or try to get any rights to US games.
Posted by matthewsf on 2009/10/10 at 10:10 AM
ESPN will not be able to re-run the game — or at least has not contracted for it yet,.
Freddy Adu’s twitter page has a list of potential internet sites that might swipe the signal. Check it out here: http://twitter.com/FreddyAdu11
Posted by Kevin on 2009/10/10 at 10:44 AM
I just checked it out and Justin.tv is on the list do you know how that works though? Do I just go to the website during the game and search it?
Posted by Mark T on 2009/10/10 at 12:18 PM
The channels on justin.tv get overloaded fairly regularly, so get in the room early to hopefully get your stream up and running. Don’t refresh or leave the page once the stream is going.
