Running Game Commentary: Hull versus Fulham

Best shirt ever?

Best shirt ever?

Disappointing game all around but Fulham get the three points. Dempsey after a good start was quite but played decently. Altidore brought in a sub was well marked but made good use of the limited supply he got. Hopefully he will get a start soon. See you all soon.

94: Hull with a free kick…last action of the game no doubt

89: Altidore is being well marked by the giant Fulham defender Hangeland. He is setup though and uses his power to charge at the Fulham goal and sends a shot which is saved just over the bar.  Nothing comes of off the corner but a nice display of what Altidore can do. The commentators seem to be fans as well.

84: More subs for both teams…sadly JVofH is off. Game is dwindling. Jozy you need to take contro lof the very little forward progress that Hull is making as you need to cement yourself as a starter. The experience you will get will be of IMMENSE help to USMNT and yourself this coming summer.

80: Dempsey with a free header off a corner…Nice try but should have done better….Wow apparently Dempsey hasn’t scored in last 14 premiership games…wonder how many he has been responsible for?

77: Cross sent into the box for Altidore but it was poor. Altidore does well to give Schwarzer some problems but Fulham clear easily.

75: Hill City with a freekick about 10 yards outside the box…Taken by Bullard and its straight into the wall. Ball eventually gets to Altidore who gets dispossessed. Fulhma attack with Dempsey but Zamora sends an easy shot well wide.

72: Fulham is attacking at will and it ends with a weak scuffed shot by Dempsey directly in the hands of Myhill. Altidore and JVofH need some service cause they ain;t getting anything right now.

69: SUB YES…Altidore in for Hunt. C’mon Jozy…lets see what you can do.

68: YES…DOUBLE DIGITS on the comments!

65: Dempsey is apparently playing just behind the strikers and almost makes it 3-0 but his shot is inches wide. Game is sringing to life but only from a Fulham perspective. Hull are hopeless and that is spearheaded by their manager.

64: GOAL 2-0 Fullham. Breakdown in Hull’s offside trap and Zamora threads a cross to Kamara who taps it in.

61: Hull really need to inject some pace or maybe even a bit of life into their attacking game…no one more perfect than Jozy…COME ON PHIL BROWN!

60: SUB...Danny Murphy off, Jonathan Greening on…Murphy has picked up a knock and limps off.

56: Looks like Jimmy Bullard might be coming on soon for Fulham. Hull playing better now and putting more pressure on the Fulham goal with two successive corners…a third coming up

53: Lamentably the second half is not much different than the first. My sandwich though is amazing!

48: Would could really help this game out and Hull especially is the introduction of Jozy…

SECOND HALF is under way. Hopefully both managers will stress attacking football to their players

45: Crowd getting more into it or is it they can;t wait till halftime so they can stuff their faces into the famous craven cottage meat pies? Meanwhile yours truly can’t wait for the halftime whistle so that he can make a sandwich….TWEET…halftime. Well Fulham have potentially jump started the game and lead 1-0

43: GOAL…Bobby Zamora heads it in after Duff sends in a stinging drive that the keeper parries straight on to Zamora’s head. Hopefully Hull will wake up and become more adventurous.

42: Bad call by the ref. Sonko for Hull city traps the ball and where as in intent it wasn’t a back pass, it turned into one when the keeper picked up the ball. Should have been a free kick

40: Dempsey is playing more of an out and out striker role now which i think is mistake. His creativity would really help break down the Hull defense.

37: Free kick for Fulham that turns into a corner and both come to nothing. Fulham need to be more creative if they are going to break down the parked bus that is Hull’s game plan. Dempsey, after a promising start hasn’t done much of note in the past 10 minutes.

33: Duff sends a low shot which is well saved by the Hull keeper and goes for a corner. Nothing comes of it but Fulham keep attacking. They should score soon which will do wonders for the game and my sanity.

32: On an exciting note, i believe my comments has reached an all time high of 5 due to my back and forth conversation with one of brothers about the game. HA…even the commentators are saying this is a boring game…at least i’m being paid for this….oh wait ;)

28: This is very boring, though the quality of football is pretty good, its just very very boring. OH Hull ventured into the Fulham half, but like a scared child being dragged through a tunnel by large men in pads, quickly retreated with their tails between their legs…yes i know a crap analogy…i blame this game for putting my brain to sleep.

24: Fulham dominating the game and Konchesky sends in an inviting ball to a stretched out Bobby Zamora who sends it wide. Best and only chance so far.

20: Hooray…a corner…and nothing comes of it.

17: This game is about as exciting as watching paint dry…and trust me back in my drinking and shrooming days, i’ve done that. Maybe they should release a gross of beach balls on the field… Hull just content to play for a draw it seems and Fulham other than Dempsey not showing much.

13: Little short pass play with Dempsey getting almost every other pass. He’s everywhere but not playing like a chicken with his head cut off but with a certain calmness and composure . Yes i think he’s the USMNT’s most complete player and that has nothing to do with the 2 goals he scored against Man U last season. That said he is such a different player with club than country…more on that in a few days.

10: Crowd chanting “C’mon Dempsey” after he gave up a handball…odd but nice to hear his name being chanted!

8: Still nothing much happening, but more on JVofH.

  1. The commentators clearly share my opinion as they are trying to say his name and his full name as much of possible and
  2. He has his ENTIRE name on his shirt. It almost completely encircles the number! I swear its in a smaller font size! I wonder if his father’s name is “The Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink”…

still nothing of note happening in the game.

5: Pretty boring stuff so far but i forgot that one of the best names in soccer, nay the world is playing for Hull City, Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink. AMAZING…i want an “of” in my name, Shaun Webbegoor of Potrero…i like it. Meanwhile in the match, nothing much is happening.

2: Clint Dempsey seems to play with much more fluidity and style and not too mention confidence when he plays with Fulham then with his national team. This will be a column soon but i do find that it is quite noticeable.

TWEET and Hull kick off.

Good to see beach balls bouncing around the stands…MAN THAT SUCKED! oh well Liverpool still played like crap but still…sigh

I think more sports need to adopt the bringing out of small children with each player routine before every game. How awesome would it be in College Football if when all the players came thundering in, they each held a child. The stampede would be crazy…or in the NBA, you would do massive chest bumps with your teammates with the kids attached…sigh…i have many more reasons to improve sports, like having the subs door in hockey swing out instead of in…but thats another column or possibly another blog.

Hello All – We’re live from Craven Cottage and by “live” i mean i’m watching it in Hi-def. This is really the way to go.

On a USMNT watch, Dempsey is starting for Fulham but Alitdores’s strong play for the USA this past week can only get on the bench. That said i bet he’s first substitute to come on…especially if the Tigers are down.

The announcers just remarked that Phil Brown punished his team recently. This included not allowing them to play darts.

NO DARTS?!…that is what constitutes punishment for professional athletes these days? That’s like punishing the Jets offensive line by telling them they can’t eat vegetables for a week.

Actually…Darts is a HUUUUGE deal in the clubhouse…its more akin to saying to baseball players, you can’t chew gum, sunflower seeds or tobacco in the dugout.

Wow…didn’t realize. I knew it was the quintessential English game, but thought that it wouldn’t be so big with the international flavor of the clubhouse.

I don’t believe the international flavor of Hull is the problem. For them it might be the no more use of hair gel

Pretty amazing historical note that both of these teams played each other 13 years ago in the 4th division of English football.

I think the announcer confused “democracy” for “meritocracy” when speaking of the relegation and promotion system in English football. As far as I know, clubs aren’t voted to the next level.

Demps had 2 goal against Chelsea last year….

Who’s got a bigger head, Bobby Zamora or Tom Huddlestone?

Compared to Don Nelson or Bruce Botchy (GS Warriors and SF Giants coaches) NEITHER

I am actually glad that Dempsey is playing up at a striker postion. With Davies most likely out for South Africa. i think we need to figure out what we’re going to do to fill his position, Casey, Ching, Cooper, none of them can do it, I think our best option now is to put Dempsey up top with Altidore and Holden can fill in nicely at left mid. We don’t lose as much with that move and its a position that Dempsey is comfortable in. and hopefully keeps playing with Fulham which will make him that much better for SA.
I don’t know, just typing out loud. Thoughts?

@Dylan — we’ll be out with a Davies sub story later this week.

You realize you’re watching a FULHAM game right?

Danny Murphy has picked up a knock.

That’s like saying Isiah Thomas ruined another basketball team or Shawn Kemp fathered another child.

Here comes Jozy in the 69th. Nice to hear the announcer say that it should have happened earlier.

I don’t think that whole “no darts” thing was very effective for Phil Brown.

I am not sure how tall the defender is marking Jozy, but Altidore hasn’t won any of the four balls in the air that he has gone for.

It was better than his half time on the pitch talk when they played Man City last year

Dylan – I think that if the US play with Altidore and Donovan up front with Dempsey right behind them, they would be an attacking force to reckon with. You could switch Donovan and Dempsey but i prefer to have Landon up front as possible

While I agree that Donovan is more dangerous up front. I think we need Donovan to create from the midfield. Someone at the midway point, that makes everyone better. Make sure our best player gets as many touches as possible.

        @Dylan, @Shaun

Agreed — Donovan is at his best when his frame is not being jacked up by a defender down the pitch. He’s great at the counterattack. Putting him upfront takes him away from his best strength.

Hangeland should have played for the US — he’s a beast and will be one of the great ones.

Miracle cure for Dempsey? How come he can suddenly play?

He’s been playing great for Fulham all year.

So much so that with Zoltan Gera coming on and Damien Duff and Jonathan Greening in the mix, there is absolutely no talk in Cottageville that Dempsey is in a rotation.

He’s expected to start all the matches he can.

What is mind-boggling and somewhat distressing to me as a USMNT fan is the effort he puts forth in those games.

Now Shaun, I know you are going to mention he just doesn’t know where to move for the Yanks, but Demps is showing more effort just tracking down over-the-top balls and pressuring the keeper and defenders from the forward position.

      Somewhat…maybe…”upsetting.”

Kaya- I think that Fulham’s style of play and formation and his position in it, helps Dempsey and is more suited to him than his role in the USMNT… He wasn’t need this past wednesday so better to have him healthy than picking up a knock

I think Dempsey would have played on Wednesday if it was needed for the US to qualify.

I also think that Dempsey is one of those guys who likes the ball (sort of like Shaq in the NBA). In other words he needs to get involved early to put forth maximum effort.

By the way, Shaun…great and entertaining running match commentary on an otherwise drowsy affair.

Matt – Meatball…pretty damn good. Vis a vis Dempsey’s effort. I really do think its about where he plays. Today he hustled as he plays right behind the strikers and can go out of position to hassle keepers and go for over the top passes and he has people behind him for cover. With the USMNT, he seems to play on the wing where part of his defensive duty is to stay on the wing. You don;t want to be caught out of position there so he has to be more subdued. That and he is being played out of position. He can come in for crosses and score like he did against Brazil but the chasing on the national team is left to the forwards only. Personally i think the US should resort to a 4-4-1-1 with Dempsey right behind Altidore and Landon behind him in the top of the diamond formation in the midfield. This way you have a holding midfielder wot help with the defenders, creativity at the top and hopefully some speedy wingers who can play some D…

    DAMN Damon with a homer!

    Mark – Thanks

I’m talking about the overall effort from Dempsey. He may not have license to meander around the pitch with the USMNT, but he should still be putting forth maximum physical effort.

On your 4-4-1-1 — we get ready for it because that’s most likely how it goes down in Davies absence–although I’m not super keen on Dempsey being in the way of Donovan runs.
