Orange Wedges: The USMNT Is Back

Orange Wedges is TSG’s gameday post that  is updated until kick-off.

Fond memories from the last time the US played Honduras.

The USMNT takes the pitch for the first time in 2010 for a friendly versus Honduras tomorrow in Los Angeles (Carson). It has been 66 days since we last saw the US squad put on a forgettable performance in Denmark, but this is a new year…a World Cup year!

The match will kick-off at 9:oopm Eastern / 6:00pm Pacific time and can be viewed on Fox Soccer Channel and Telefutura. TSG will be converging on Carson to watch the match live from in the American Outlaws section at the Home Depot Center.

  • An important reminder for US Soccer fitness coach Pierre Barrieu when it comes to evaluating player performances tonight, “Although Saturday’s match is a chance for individual players to make a statement…This game is only one day out of 24. It all goes into the evaluation of the whole camp — their training habits, their attitude — all the things we evaluate on a daily basis.” (quote via ESPN Soccernet)
  • 10 players from the January 2006 camp made the final World Cup roster for the USMNT. Who will it be this time around?
  • Though the field will probably soggy from this week’s deluge, there is a only a small chance of rain for the game.

A friendly versus Honduras also provides some relevancy to post the Honduran radio call of Jonathan Bornstein’s header that propelled Los Catrachos to the World Cup finals.

Two notes here — only one of merit:

    – Check out the centralbacks…with the Gooch (and JDM) coming back and it would appear both Spector and Boca capable of playing the middle…there may be only one spot up in the air here.

    – TSG is down to 2 Beckerman Ales and 2 McCarty Ales for the weekend thanks to the Virgin America baggage handling….phooey…

Centerbacks. but we know what you meant.

That’s probably the best feeling the commentators have had in their lives. This is the equivalent to Stu’s right-on-target cross centimeters past CD9’s head at the Azteca after we went down. . if it goes in that is.

Thanks Antonio — fixed that….that play would have brought the house down…especially if CD9 scores two.

If he got a knock on that(assuming its impossible to put that good of a cross wide or high) I would’ve literally ran out into the middle of the street butt naked and then proceed to do burpees while chanting “Oleeee ole ole oleeeee. Oleeeee Oleeee”

One now USMNT note…with Jozy still out for Hull….Hull do not have Craig Fagan or the recently acquired Amr Zaki in their team tomorrow at Manchester United.

So we’ll have to wait on where Zaki plays another day.

Thought he is strong with a low center of gravity…I still think he plays more of the Fagan bulldog role.

Everton is struggling this morning. Donovan is over on the right side, but, again, the Toffees are attacking up the left flank.

Birmingham up 1-0 in the 37th.

Quote from announcer…”Everton can’t play any worse than this in the second half.”

Donovan didn’t look great today, I saw that substitute coming. Does seem like they are avoiding that right flank though.

I’ll be the black guy with the pink gloves at HDC. Not to many of those at a USMNT friendly
