Quick Bit: Our 2010 Not Going Team…

This column is a warm-up for a piece publishing tomorrow morning….

Robinho or Pato? We'll take Pato every time...

TSG member Dylan posed the question in our comment section yesterday: What is TSG’s All-Not-Going Team….as in not going to South Africa in June.

We’re going to pick this team as we would any other….for the best shot to win as a team, not a collection of individuals.
Thus a few folks are going to be left off due to position depth or team reasons (like Craig Bellamy). We’re also not limiting to ourselves to only players from nations not attending, we’re open to players not going with their qualified national team.

This is my personal best foot forward for players I like, so open to quite a bit of debate.

Here we go:

11 at the Whistle

G: Shay Given (Manchester City, Ireland)

Vargas: The pride of Peru shoots down would-be strikers on the left...

LB: Juan Vargas (Fiorentina, Peru)
CB: Brede Hangeland (Fulham, Norway)
CB: Thomas Vermaelen (Arsenal, Belgium)
RB: Dmytro Chygrynskiy (Barcelona, Ukraine)

CDM:Mahamadou Diarra (Real Madrid, Mali)
LM/FW: Alexandre Pato (AC Milan, Brazil)
CM: Luka Modric (Tottenham Hotspur, Tablecloths)
RM: Antonio Valencia (Manchester United, Ecuador)

STR: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Barcelona, Sweden)
STR: Hugo Rodallega (Wigan, Colombia)

Subs:
G: Brad Friedel, Edwin Van Der Saar
DEF: Yuri Zhirkov, Vincent Kompany, Darijo Srna
MID: Ryan Giggs, Ronaldhino, Clarence Seedorf, Andrei Arshavin, Euzebiusz Smolarek
STR: Emmanuel Adebayor, Edin Dzeko

Thankfully, Maradona came to his senses at the end of last year and started calling in one of TSG’s favorite attackers (and perhaps the best striker not named Rooney right now?) Gonzalo Higuain.

Following the Zebra Principle: Croatia and Modric (center, bottom)...are there 15 of them there or 6?

It came down to Josh Wolff, Kenny Cooper, Chad Barrett and Emmanuel Adebayor and I took Adebayor only because he plays in the EPL.

I can accept that….. As long as Bornstein is on your best players going to the world cup list….

Valencia over Arshavin….easy decision for me.

First Valencia is in his best form right now and Arshavin only does it in spurts…whether he is in shape or not. Arshavin is capable of the spectacular, but he also does play within the team all that well.

He’s going to be a super sub.

Right now, if I’m 19 out of the 20 EPL teams I want Valencia in his current form over Arshavin.

Harder decision: Rodallega over Adebayor…Rodallega has only done it for a short time.

      Dan:

According to ESPN’s USA page he’s still in the mix…based upon that current news I couldn’t rule him out yet.

      • Good point. Since ESPN has said so, and their word is bond in the American soccer community, I will hold off on writing my Hejduk Nats obituary until I hear otherwise from the worldwide leader in sports.

For those that don’t know Juan Vargas….he’s like a more defensive Florent Malouda with better crossing ability. Plays LB for Fiorentina

Now the question is how well they would do as a team in the WC?

Not suggesting him for the squad or anything, but whatver happened to Quaresma? Is he dead?

    Fellaini? No?

Quaresma’s with Inter. And he’s gotta be in Portugal’s squad, right?

Love Fellaini, really do…as both the player and as being an Everton fan.

Bigger fan of Modric’s game. If the team didn’t have Zlatan, Vermaelen and Hangeland for headers maybe…but he just misses out.

      But love Fellaini:
