Fulham v Atletico Madrid – Europa Cup final

The sheep and I after the game. We both survived. Me from the Bloody Mary's, it from god knows what.

Both teams deserve all your support as they played their hearts out. Here’s to hoping that this competition gets a good following next year. I’m going to finish my Bloody Mary and try and do some work!

TWEEET TWEET TWEET. The two Atletico fans in the bar are cheering their hearts out. Hard luck for Fulham who were deserved finalists and played a very very entertaining game, but Forlan and Aguero were too much and the mattress makers are deserved winners of the first Europa Cup!

121:00 – Balls are being launched into the Spanish box in desperate fashion but Fulham cannot capitalize. Forlan once again destroys an English teams hopes.

119:00 – Forlan still has shirt off and gets a yellow card for his troubles. In a time wasting effort, Aguero is taken off. He’s been Atletico’s best player as he has been responsible for both goals, but one cannot discount, Forlan’s scoring skills.

116:00 – GOOOAL – FORLAN. Ageuro still fresh apparently chases the ball down the wing, skins Baird and sends in a low cross that Forlan stabs home….So sad for Fulham. They were playing well. A predatory goal from the Uruguayan. Atletico 2 – Fulham 1… C’MON FULHAM!

115:00 – Dempsey is being brought down every time he gets the ball. His energy and skill is to much for the Atletico defenders. Unfortunately Fulham cannot capitalize.

113:00 – The rain is coming down and people are losing their footing. Bar is getting rowdier. I fear for the inflatable sheep. Nevland tries a spectacular spin kick but it goes over the bar.

111:00 – Ujfalusi is doing his best Maicon impression and charges down the right wing and his cross is met first time by Forlan but his powerful shot is sent over the bar.

108:00 – Dempsey is tackled outside the box and wins a free kick. Deuce showed good ball skill there. He could teach Jozy a thing or two. The in-swinging free kick lands in the 6 yard box but its well cleared by Atletico.

Second half of extra time is underway as Salvio gets a yellow card for a poor challenge.

105:00 – Forlan charges toward the Fulham penalty box and lays off to Aguero who fades right but Konchesky does well and gives away a throw in. Forlan comes right back and nutmegs a Fulham defender with a pass but Aguero’s sliding shot hits the side netting.

103:00 – Players are showing some sings of fatigue which is understandable considering the frenetic pace the game has been played in.

101:00 – Chaos in the Fulham box as the ball bounces around like a pinball being controlled by a very excited person playing pinball. Schwarzers lanky octopus like arms save the day…close one for Fulham.

98:00 – Atletico press and Aguero causes some problems for the Fulham’s defenders but his shot is scuffed.

94:00 – Just stabbed myself with the little sword that holds the olive and onion, meanwhile a welshman is kissing the inflatable sheep next to me. In the game, Fulham are going for it but the Atletico defense is playing out of their skins and intercept Gera’s through ball.

PEEP PEEP – extra time is under way and so is Bloody Mary number 3!

Will we see this in extra time?

Friend comes back with drink. Greatest person ever!

92:00 –  Friend reads my post and punches me. They are also playing the Cardiff city v Leicester game and I noticed one of the bar patrons is holding an inflatable sheep. As you were. TWEET TWEET TWEET…  extra football!

91:00 – Friend is doing a shockingly bad job of getting me a third bloody mary. To be fair the game is incredibly exciting and she is awesome enough to join me here so all is forgiven….for now.

2 minutes of added time.

89:00 – Bartender has disappeared. This is not good.

87:00 – The mattress makers are laying siege  on the Fulham penatly area but Fulham deal with it well and counter and win a free kick in a dangerous area just outside the box. Murphy takes but hits the wall and goes out for a corner kick.

84:00 – Nevland on for Damien Duff.

80:00 – Will this incredible game go into overtime? As I write this, a long ball from Gera searches out Dempsey but the American is well marshaled by the Atletico defenders. They immediately counter and the beautiful cross is scuffed at by Forlan and Fulham clear.

78:00 – Reyes off and Salvio on for Atletico. I thought he was Atletico’s most dangerous player, well after Forlan and Aguero.

75:00 – Etuhu fouls Aguero in a dangerous area…and by area I don’t mean on his body but in relation to the Fulham goal. It is well saved by Schwarzer.

73:00 – Nothing comes off the corner as it is punched out well by the 19 year old keeper and Atletico attack. End to end stuff here. Half way through blood mary. This one has those round cocktail onions in it…YUM

70:00 – Atletico parking themselves in the Fulham half but Gera gets the ball for a one on one but holds it up for Dempsey. After a brief passing kick about, Fulham lose it and Atletico attack. Eventually Dempsey wins Fulham a corner.

67:00 – Atletico enjoy a good spell on the ball but nothing really is troubling the Fulham defenders. The cottagers counter and Duff has a stinging shot go wide. Meanwhile Jurado is on for Simao…interesting. Things are now becoming a wee bit how we say…blurry

64:00 – Hangeland wrestles someone to the ground and gives up a free kick. Atletico try a training ground special but the initial pass goes to far. Forlan ends up with ball dribbles through everyone but his final pass is well cut out by Fulham.

60:00 – A spectacular shot by Davies almost gets him his second but its well saved by De Egea.

58:00 – Okay people. The Bloody Mary’s here have green beans also known as string beans in them…not  the small round variety found in mexican food. Meanwhile Dempsey is playing aggressively and harrying the Atletico defenders.

55:00 – DEMPSEY ON for Zamora. BIG BIG ups for Zamora as he played his heart out and through obvious pain. Deuce becomes the first American to play in European cup final.

52:00 – Gera breaks free but his first touch is too hard and he clashes with De Egea who comes out hard for the ball and Gera accidentally nicks him as the young Spaniard grasps his head. Totally unintentional there but the referee wants some words with the players.

51:00 – Fulham’s domination leads to a Duff cross that is just pushed out of the way of Zamora’s head and the Spanish counter through Aguero but Fulham deal with it well.

48:00 – Second half has started at a less frenetic pace than the first ended. Gera is sent down the wing but is well tackled by the Atletico defense. Its not often you hear that. Fulham dominating so far.

Danny Coyles and their wonderful Bloody Mary's

PEEP – and the second half is under way

While looking for a new picture to put on the left my friend claims that Fulham are an ugly team. So instead I took a picture of me at the bar…which is not that much better but better than Tevez or Ribery

Turns out that Bloody Mary’s have vegetables in them. Just ate my beans and my friends beans…who needs food!

Well that was an exciting half. Great goals by both teams and both cases the defense was at fault and could have done better. There has been talk of getting food…pershaw i say…lets wait till after the match.

TWEET TWEET – and thats half…drink number two!

44:00 – Atletico taking their third consecutive corner which is only marginally better but Schwarzer punches it clear. The rebound hits Konchesky’s hand but the ref plays it on. Eventually Atletico take their 5th corner but from it Forlans shot is easily saved and the Australian keeper sends the ball into the other half.

42:00 – Its raining in Hamburg as Atletico win a corner of a deflected ball that comes off Duff. Fulham deal with poorly taken corner well.

40:00 – Game is going at full pace now. This is a great match so far!

38:00 – GOOOAL DAVIES – An excellent response by Fulham. Zamora does all the hard work by dribbling the ball into the box but takes too long to shoot and passes it around the box. Gera finally gets it and chips it over everyone to Simon Davies who rifles it into the back of the net. Atletico’s defenders had no idea what hit them. I might have pulled out my shoulder in celebrating. Atletico 1 – Fulham 1

36:00 – Zamora should be praised for his efforts but he is just not healthy enough to be out there. He needs to be subbed soon. Bring on Deuce!

35:00 -Fulham still look lost and are being bombarded once again. They must not concede a second but will if they keep playing with a deer in headlights mentality.

32:00 – GOOOOAL – FORLAN. Aguero traps the cross from Simao but his shot is weak but goes straight to Forlan who is aware enough to steer it past Schwarzer. Unlucky for the cottagers, but they look lost out there. They are being tortured by Reyes on one wing and Simao and Aguero on the other. Atletico 1 – Fulham 0

31:00 – Halfway through the Bloody and I just realized I haven’t eaten anything yet todsay

27:00 – Aguero again is terrorizing the Fulham defenders down the left wing and waltzes into the box but once again his cross is dealt with by Hangeland. Atletico win a free kick but Domingiez’s header is comfortably saved by Schwarzer.

25:00 – Aguero turns two Fulham defenders and runs into the penalty box but his pass to Forlan is intercepted and sent away for safety. Lovely bit of skill there but the final pass was wanting.

23:00 – Interestingly the more of the Bloody Mary I drink the better the sound issue is. Forlan unleashes a shot which he just gets under and it flies over the bar.

20:00 – Davies unleashes a cracker of a shot but it goes straight at David de Egea. I remember watching him warm up at the Real versus Atletico game and he did not look good. Guess he’s on a run of good form as he got included as the 4th keeper in Spain’s 30 man squad.

17:00 – Gera takes an ambitious shot that goes flying over bar. This sound issue really sucks!

15:00 – Etuhu grabs the arm of Ujfalusi and he comically falls over but its a dangerous free kick for the Spanish side. Reyes lines up his shot and it requires a punch in the air from the Australian keeper who catches the second time around. Fulham have their defensive tacics correct, they’re just not playing well, giving away easy balls and needless fouls.

12:00 – Terrible giveaway by captain Danny Murphy which is latched on by Aguero who passes to Forlan who shoots and it beats Schwarzer but not the post and it bounces to safety. Very lucky for Fulham. Its all Atletico now.

10:00 – Annoyingly the sound is about 2 seconds ahead of the action. Is anyone else having this issue or is it the bar that i’m at? Zamora has been caught offside twice already.

8:00 – Raul Garcia takes an ambitious shot which is deflected for a corner. Corner pings around and Atletico win a throw in. So far Hodgson seems to have his defensive tactics spot on.

Drink for the day

6:00 – Atletico’s attacking corp are now awake and Argentine Aguero, challenges Duff down the wing who concedes a throw in. Danger averted.

3:00 – DAMN that’s a tasty drink. Fulham are a little shaky at first but are regaining control. Atletico are not doing much of any interest. It really is a game of grit versus flair today…my money is on grit!

PEEEP – and my bloody mary is here and the game has started as well.

Looks like Zamora had his daily injection of painkillers and is starting up top for Fulham. The mattress makers are lined up as expected…shakey defense, powerful attackers. They exchange the club pennants and meet all the referee’s…Where’s my bloody mary?

Hello all,

Make sure you tell Steve over there that you’re from The Shin Guardian Shaun.

If you fake like your a Spurs fan, you may get a free lunch.

  2. Alright Sean, I’ll be joining you at a bar very far away very soon! Aren’t you glad it’s not Liverpool in the final? God that would’ve been boring!

No doubt Zamora is playing with 1 leg. 1-1 with 2 pints down here in DC.

“I think if Fulham win it will be by one goal, maybe two with the second coming very very late on as Athletico risk everything and pile forward. But, I also see this going to extra time if Fulham are to win”

    Could I be right?!?!

  13. Posted by GeorgeCross on 2010/05/12 at 1:41 PM

Who do you think Fulham’s penalty takers are if it goes that far? I would have picked Duff, byt he’s been subbed.

    • Posted by Nick on 2010/05/12 at 1:50 PM

(In no particular order) Gera, Murphy, Nevland, Dempsey, Konchesky

      • Posted by GeorgeCross on 2010/05/12 at 2:03 PM

You don’t think Hodgson will bring somebody on to take one specifically?

        • Posted by sfshwebb on 2010/05/12 at 2:04 PM

who did you have in mind?

        • Posted by GeorgeCross on 2010/05/12 at 2:11 PM

I’m not too keen on Konchesky taking one. Perhaps Greening, but not sure he’s seen too much playing time recently…

But I am 100% sure that this would have been figured out on the training pitch.

          • Posted by matthewsf on 2010/05/12 at 2:40 PM

I wouldn’t let Greening near a soccer ball at this point or help me up if I’ve tripped and he’s the only person around.

        • Posted by Nick on 2010/05/12 at 2:27 PM

I only mentioned Konchesky because he’s left footed, the rest are righties, and he takes some of Fulham’s free kicks.

  14. damn.

Clint Dempsey has appeared in two Cup Finals in the last 12 months…is this a good omen or bad omen for the World Cup?

    • Posted by GeorgeCross on 2010/05/12 at 2:30 PM

Bad omen. It clearly shows lack of bottle to get over the finish line. Fulham needed true Brit grit tonight.

      • Posted by Nick on 2010/05/13 at 5:56 AM

What they needed was their talisman Bobby Zamora (call him a Brit but he’s still Trinidadian until England caps him), as soon as he came off Fulham’s offense had not cohesion.

        • Posted by GeorgeCross on 2010/05/13 at 6:19 AM

Zamora was born and raised in London – how does that make him anything other than English (or British)?!

    • Posted by Antonio H. on 2010/05/12 at 5:44 PM

      3rd time’s a charm…

  16. tough loss for Fulham today

I notice a Spurs jersey framed and signed in the background of that pic in the post. COYS!!

  17. Posted by Len on 2010/05/12 at 3:21 PM

My friend’s in Madrid and says it’s absolute bedlam. Honking horns, screams of “Atleti!” and even a few gunshots he tells me. So ironic that Atletico was the one to win the championship and not Real, albeit a lesser championship.

I’m guessing that Spurs jersey was put there for or by the San Francisco Spurs Supporters Club. I gotta check Danny Coyles out on a game day next year. COYS!

  18. Is it just me or did Sean’s facial hair actually thicken from the pre-match to post-match photos?

  19. Posted by i like tuesday on 2010/05/12 at 5:22 PM

I’m on the metro and I’m busting for a slosh. Poor fulham. Good match though. Fulham just lacked that bit of quality service that usually comes from Duff or Murphy. Both were subdued.

  20. Posted by Kevin on 2010/05/12 at 6:50 PM

This is random, but according to mlssoccer.com Eddie Johnson is stretchered off in his last game. They fear a hamstring injury.
