Group B Match 1 – South Korea V. Greece

The Man United work horse is running things in Port Elizabeth

PEEEEEEP PEEEP and that’s the first win of the world cup. After two draws, South Korea notch up the first 3 points. Join me in 40 for Nigeria versus Argentina.

89:00 - Game is dying down as Greece seem to resign themselves to the defeat.

86:00 – S. Korea capitalize on some slack defending and charge into the box but a great last second tackle pushes the ball out to another korean winger who fires but is well saved by the Greek keeper.

81:00 – Great one handed save by Sung-Ryong Jung as Gekas traps the ball outside the box, spins and sends a cannon goal bound.

79:00 – The Greek side have really picked up their game. Its really too late but they’re now beginning to trouble the South Korean defense somewhat. They’re still leaving big gaps in their back line that S. Korea are exposing but at least Greece are pressing the Korean defense back.

76:00 - Greece send in a cross which ricochets around the box and is volleyed hard but right into a defenders side. Greece appeal for handball (it wasn’t) but the offside flag was up.

74:00 – Kim Nam-Il on for Ki Sung Yueng who set up the first goal. Apparently this is a defensive move for South Korea.

73:00 - Greece are getting balls in the box but their control is failing them. They win a corner but they should be doing better.

70:00 – The Greeks showing some more attacking intent here but the score remains the same. Meanwhile on a completely different note Vegan food I had last night (rehearsal dinner I was at) 2 – Me 0

64:00 - My first prediction for a big money transfer is for Cha-Du-Ri. The right back has had an excellent game and has looked very dangerous going forward. His crossing has been spectacular and he’s not afraid to bomb forward. He currently plays for Freiburg in the Bundesliga. Look for him to go to a bigger club if keeps up this sort of play!

61:00 – And the Greeks make their last change. They take of captain Charisteas and Kapetanos comes in. One would think he would take the captains armband based on his name…but he doesn’t. PUNCHY OVER HERE!

59:00 – Samaras off, Salpingidis on. The Celtic man really didn’t do anything of note except look good with long hair…which is important.

56:00 - That goal was coming all along. Greece were playing in a very unfocused manner. This really outs the pressure on Nigeria to get a result against Argentina.

52:00 – GOOOOOOOALLLLLLL – Park Ji-Sung. Poor mistake from Greece as Park latches onto it and works his way into the box with a defender at his heals and slots the ball past the keeper. Bad mistake by Greece but excellent finish by the United midfielder. South Korea 2 – Greece 0

48:00 - Extra defender or not, South Korea start up where they left off and are passing well through the Greek defense.

TWEEET And they’re off again.

Greece make a substitution and take out main play maker Karagounis and replace him with Patsatzogolou. Now they have their 5 defenders back there. Odd move

PEEEEEEP. Well the game started of quickly and there was an early goal but with the Greeks having to chase the game and opening up their play, South Korea countered well. Hopefully it will pick up in the second half. 15 minute nap coming up!

44:00 - A long cross is sent into the Korean box which should be routine for Jung-Sung Ryong but it gets caught up in the sun and he almost gifts the ball to the Greek forwards but pounces on the ball to avert the danger.

42:00 – Game is in a bit of a lull. The Greeks arn’t being creative enough to break down a well organized but unspectacular South Korean defense and then are getting caught out at back.

39:00 – South Korea are taking turns at running at the Greeks on the counter. This time it was RB Cha-Du-Ri. He’s eventually caught in possession but the Greeks have to be careful.

30:00 – The Greek defenders are really being tested as South Korea keep countering. Greece are needing to stretch out being down a goal and are leaving huge gaps in their traditional water tight defense.

28:00 – From a deflective cross, S. Korea attack quickly and Park Ji-Sung sends a beautiful ball to Park Chu Young who beats his defender and shots low but its very well saved by an onrushing Tsorvas who stretches out a leg and the ball bounces over. Great football all around.

23:00 - Greece win a corner but South Korea clear and immediately attack. Kim Jung-Woo leads the charge and sets up a forward but he sends his shot well wide. Nice build up though.

19:00 – Both teams are passing it very well and are finding space between the defenders. Hard to tell if its visionary play or poor defending but wither way its entertaining.

17:00 - Replays show that it was indeed a penalty.

15:00 – So maybe the Kyriakgos’s injury is a bigger deal as Greece are playing a more traditional 4-4-2 versus their usual 5 defenders. S. Korea are the ones with the ball though and are probing the Greek defense. They attack and mild shouts of penalty are heard but the referee waves play on.

11.00 - Greece are really opening up and leaving lots of space for S. Korea to attack. This could be quite the exciting game.

9:00 - Greece wake up and start attacking immediately. They win a corner through some strange deflections by the Korean defense but the keeper punches it clear.

6:00 – GOOOOOOALLLLLLL – LEE JONG SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.S. Korea win a free kick down in the corner area and the ball goes over the Greek defenders and the central defender stabs it home on the volley. Nice goal but poor defending by Greece. South Korea 1 – Greece 0

2:00 – Samaras scampers down the left hand side and sends an inviting cross which was headed out wide for a corner. Karagounis takes the corner and Torosidis stabs it just over. Close one for the greeks.

Karagounis - Greece's main play maker

TWEEEEEET TWEEET and South Korea kick it off….

———————————————

Sadly, the Port Elizabeth Stadium is kind of empty (at least from what we can see on TV) but man is the crowd loud with their Vuvuzelas.

This is too early, and I’m on the East Coast. I feel for you.

I turned it on and they were mentioning someone was out, most likely due to injury. Impact?

Its Krgiagkos who plays for Liverpool…He’s good in the air and a noon-nonsense defender which means he doesn’t have much ball control. Not sure how much it will impact Greece’s defense

Great goal by SK, not great defending by Greece. Was that a corner or a free kick?

It was a free kick but but it was right at the corner flag

Free Kick basically in the corner. It was just about a foot outside of where a corner would have been hit. I was hoping for a early SK goal, should make the game more interesting.

Thanks, I saw the replay and where the ball was and wasn’t sure if it was a free kick or corner spotted badly (was making breakfast). Definitely should make the game more open and interesting with Greece having to attack now.

Great save by the keeper. There have been a few so far in the 1st 3 games.

Really? I guess it’s good we’ll have someone rooting for us, but I don’t want to hear little anecdotes about the players or when you played. And Terry now has a sympathiser.

The funny thing is, pre-game Lalas was talking about Greece’s stout defending, and then they let in the softest of goals. Greece had so many players in the six yard box but yet it still fell to an unmarked Korean (who should have been one of the main players Greece match-up with). Again. basic training ground stuff.

    What did Harkes say?

Halftime now. Greece pressing to get the second goal but look uncomfortable doing so. We’ll see if SK can play “we can run more than you” for 90 whole minutes.

My only thought to why they took out Karagounis is to try to get a counter-attack goal and if they can’t, only lose by 1. They could be trying to save him for the next 2 games, which will be at altitude, unlike this one.

I don’t think I’m going to be able to avoid the 4:30 games forever, but I passed on this one. It seemed so much easier in 2002… Anyway, good on you, Shaun. Pretty impressive that you can down bloody mary after bloody mary, but some tofu meat replacement can take you out. =)
I still am annoyed at Greece for 2004, so good for S. Korea.
