Group E Game 1 – The Netherlands versus Denmark

San Francisco resident and Dutch national Ben Oude Kamphuis with "ol nellie" is a happy man after todays game

PEEEEEP PEEEEEP PEEP. A clinical game by the dutch though Denmark were unlucky to give up the own goal, the second goal was always coming.

3 minutes of added time

88:00 - An excellent clearance by Poulsen as Afellay volleys in a cross that is past Sorenson but an outstretched Poulsen lunges forward and clears the ball of the line.

85:00 – GOOOOOOOOOALLLL – Kuyt but Elia does all the work as he skips into the box and latches onto a Sneijder through ball, one times it passed Sorenson but it bounces of the post right Kuyt who just taps it in for the goal. The Netherlands 2 – Denmark 0

82:00 – Sneijder takes a shot that bounces of Agger and Sorenson has to push it onto the bar. Another corner for the Dutch but nothing comes off it.

76:00 - RVP off, Afellay on.

73:00 – Elia has been a live wire down the left wing since he has come on and sends in a dangerous cross that is punched clear by Sorenson, Van Bommel collects the rebound, bumbles it around but then strikes a fierce shot into the side netting.

71:00 - Kuyt playing like he does for Liverpool by being everywhere as he comes back to do some defending after a nice move by Rommedahl. Shame Dirk doesn’t have the same quality of team mates at Liverpool that he has on his national team.

69:00 - Elia with a gorgeous move to free himself from two Danish players and scampers into the box and lays off to RVP whose immediately tackled. Good football all around.

67:00 - Van de Vaart off, Elia on. He’s an exciting player to watch!

64:00 – Back and I apparently missed a dutch goal…sigh…An own goal at that.

Not often you see Gio scoring for the Dutch (5 goals) but the "old man" has earned over a 100 caps for his national side.

No extra time as the ref blows the whistle to end the first half. I’m off to take someone to the airport and will be back as soon as possible.

45:00 - Rommedahl skips beautifully between two Dutch defenders and is brought down but referee signals a corner.

44:00 – De Jong on thin ground as he scythes down Bendtner but escapes a card.

43:00 - Poor defending/unfortunate rebound lands at RVP’s feet but the Arsenal man does too many juking and twisting and his final shot hits the side netting.

37:00 – Another nice counter by Denmark as Bendtner is the architect. He gathers the ball in midfield runs with it and passes to Kahlenberg who controls and sends a shot bound for the top corner that the Dutch keeper does well to save. Nothing comes from the corner.

33:00 - The Dutch beginning to find gaps in the Danish defense as they win a series of corners. Off the last one, Danish counter very well and Stekelenburg is called into saving a very well struck shot by Rommedahl.

30:00 – Another recipient of a De Jong special as he comes in two footed on Jorgensen (does get the ball) right in front of the referee who waves play on. The Danish captain is in pain and play stops.

27:00 - A nice counter by Denmark as the ball comes out wide to Rommedahl who sends it back over to Bendtner who has a free header and sends it just wide. He had options did the Arsenal man and could have done better.

26:00 - The game has become rather boring. So much so that the crowd have resorted to doing the “wave”. I attempt to join them here at the TSG studios…dog looks at me with disdain.

20:00 - Some very nice quick passing through the Danish back 4 finds Van de Vaart with an open shot but his effort is immediately charged down and the deflection goes out for a corner.

18:00 – Holland maintaining most of the possession but Denmark’s back line as well as midfielders are providing plenty of cover. I bet if this was Greece everyone would be lambasting them for parking the bus but the Danes are doing the exact same thing.

15:00 - The Dutch are caught in possession and the ball falls to Bendtner who does some lovely juking to free himself from two midfielders but his pass afterward is left wanting.

10:00 – Another bobble by a keeper though this one with less disastrous results as Kuyt fires one at Sorenson who juggles it but grabs it at a second attempt.

7:00 – Clearly the dutch don’t think much of Denmark’s free kick taking abilities as they put up a solitary wall from 30 yards out. The shot was low but wide….smart choice I guess.

4:00 - GVB still going strong for the Dutch at the ripe old age of 35!

Often been called a "nasty piece of work", Poulsen will command from right in front of the back four

TWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET and they’re off

The dutch fans are out in full force here in soccer city.

Pretty decent game so far. The Danes are very tactically sound. Dejong is a menace!

I think Ye Dong did (finally!) get a card on that last challenge. That guy’s a reckless dick, no respect for other players. One would think after breaking someone’s leg that you might back off a bit, but apparently not.

Denmark is playing well. I’d like to see them convert something early in the half.

The Azzuri are out in force on the Caltrain this morning! Props to the TSG crew for the commentary on all these games. On a morning like this one when I slept in, it’s nice to get the blow by blow. Thanks!

Has Shaun gone MIA? Finally keel over from doing too much live commentary? I don’t blame him…

haha – Still here but had to get some “real” work done which took me away from Japan/Cameroon. What a great result for the Japanese though huh! Will be back for Italy though!
