The Cosmos Looking To Retake New York

Pele at Copa NY today to announce the re-introduction of the New York Cosmos who have a stated goal to eventually get run in MLS.

TSG is in with three stipulations:

• The new team must have the same or similar 70’s hair-dos

• Shep Messing doesn’t do the announcing

• We get another fireman’s calendar.

It would be awesome if the NY Cosmos triggered the financial downfall of the league. Again.

    It’s like a zombie movie.

It would be great if this happened, a potential NYC-derby. It could be mega!

Being serious and putting the nostalgia and cool-factor aside for one minute, I am not so sure that this is the best idea at this point in time.

As somebody who regularly attends NYRB’s home games, I can honestly say that the stadium has pretty much been less than half full (except vs the friendly against Spurs, which was full of English ex-pats wanting to see an EPL team). I think the MLS shouldn’t the ignore the principals that have seen the league successfully grow over the last 15 years. Perhaps the MLS/RBs should concentrate on filling this stadium, week-in week-out, season after season before they introduce another team to NY. NYC definitely has the popultaion and the potential to support two teams, but evidently not right now. Let’s not run before we can walk.

edit: except vs the friendly against Spurs, which was full of English ex-pats **and EPL fans** wanting to see an EPL team.

I’ll likely right about this, but I really think the location of a stadium is a certain challenge for NYRB. They definitely get the hard core (Kearny, NJ) soccer fan but I don’t think they reach NYC like they hope to.

You need to be able to get folks that can just hop a subway. I know there is a direct route from NYC on the PATH (I’ve taken it and it’s super convenient).

Problem is it’s on the West Side of Manhattan and huge part of the population lives on the boroughs off the East Side or on the East Side itself. Spanish Harlem for crissakes is on the East Side.

If the Cosmos play at ICahn Stadium on Randall’s Island (off the Triboro Bridge), they’ll draw from all the boroughs and Long Island.

There is no doubt a lot of truth behind what you are saying Matt. Would be interesting to see the RB’s location analysis… I am sure the cost of the land was a huge factor in deciding Harrison, NJ. But like you already said, it really is a doddle getting their via the PATH.

  3. In 50 years when the city can support more than two teams, ala London, maybe we can bring back the NY/NJ Metrostars too….
