Update: Kenny Coopah….Cooper officially signs with the Portland Timbers.
Some quick news to get you started on just a Suuuuper Draft sort of day.
• Just Super
MLS SuperDraft day today. Unfortunately, we’re not your best resource today….but I am hearing that “there is a lot of speculation as to the 1st pick.” (Ha, ha)
I’ve seen Will Bruin play a few times; like his game though.
Add your comments in and I’ll put them up in this post or another….
• Not USMNT
Lee Nguyen apparently applying for Vietnamese citizenship so he can join their national team. This is one courtesy our friends at Soccer Over There. Saw him play against China–briefly–in 2007 he had “junky” offensive game (that’s a positive), but just couldn’t or hasn’t put it all together yet.
• Icy Cool
Via German based reporter Dan Bu, Nürnberg´s Marek Mintal will travel to the USA this weekend to negotiate a deal with MLS club Philadelphia Union.
Video of the Slovakian slugger right here.
(Bu also comments that an update on Freddy Adu is expected soon.)
• Rover Over
Roque Santa Cruz is headed back to Blackburn, the scene of the last place he didn’t steal a salary. That was always the odds-on destination for him; his brother is in the Academy there.
• Double Dutch
Hide your Stu Holdens! … Sky Sports reports the Heckyll to Nigel De Jon’sJekyll, master black arts man Mark Van Bommel wants a Barclays move, already “linked” with Villa.
• From Prime to Choice
Apparently, the Yak (Yakubu) will be fed at Championship side Leicester City through the end of this campaign. The move expected to be made permanent in the summer.

In semi-related transfer rumors(with an American twist): Soccernet’s “On the Move” blog is “reporting” Chelsea will move for Neven Subotić for €21, according to Bild.

its always great to have more reason to root against this team.
Posted by dth on 2011/01/13 at 8:37 AM
Lee Nguyen–is he even eligible to play? Is he not cap-tied to the U.S. by virtue of his youth national team caps?
Posted by bunkelUSA on 2011/01/13 at 11:33 AM
The article says that as long as you don’t play more than 3 games for a national team you’re eligible to switch. News to me, I’ve always understood that you can only switch if you’re appearances for a national team have been in non-competitive matches (i.e. Jermaine Jones, Edgar Castillo). Nguyen played in the 2007 Copa America, a FIFA recognized tourney, so I thought he would be cap tied because of that. Hmmm.

*your appearances

I agree and in addition i thought the rule was that you have to be eligible for the country you want to play for at the time you played for the first country, i.e. he needed to be elogible to play for vietnam at the time he represented the US at any level….if he is applying for citizenship in vietnam, it means that he was not eligible to pay for vietnam at the time he represented the USA so he cannot be eligible…..

The US-Chile match will only be “televised” on Telefutura and ESPN3.com.
This is disgusting. USSF fails miserably again. What a pathetic organization. How can soccer grow in a country where the average viewer doesn’t even have an option to watch the game? I understand the other year it was Mexico’s fault that the USA/Mexico game was only televised on mun2 in the USA, but what is the explanation for this choice? I don’t have any Spanish channels and although I have a PC and an Xbox, I can’t watch ESPN3 because my ISP (the only one I can get in my area) doesn’t have an agreement with ESPN to allow ESPN3. Maybe if we complain enough they will expand the viewing options. You can’t tell me FSC or ESPN2/ESPNU/ESPN Classic couldn’t have picked this up??!!
Although after that horrible game last January in California who would want to?

I just want to see all of the up-and-coming players that could factor in during the coming world cup cycle. I have tickets though and will be traveling to catch this one.
Posted by dth on 2011/01/13 at 9:14 AM
I think you’ve answered your own question. Fact is, only the diehards want to see a game contested between two C-teams, esp. when one of the C-teams–Chile’s–is not exactly a sexy name.
Posted by Berg on 2011/01/13 at 10:00 AM
I hear ya, but with the youth being represented on the US team, it would have been a great time to market the “up-and-coming” nature of the squad. I think it’s in ESPN’s interest exploit the current and future tie-ins between the USMNT and the MLS to help build and maintain the interest of the casual fan.

Incidentally, Japan is playing Syria right now and Honda and Kagawa are playing together beautifully.

annnd Portland takes Nagbe with the 2nd pick.
Considering Portland’s history with #1 picks… well it can only mean good things.. right?
Posted by FutbolAmerica on 2011/01/13 at 4:26 PM
I don’t see Michael Jordon coming from this draft. A Kevin Durant maybe. But hey, Greg Oden is still young, right?
Posted by John on 2011/01/13 at 5:27 PM
as Benjamin Button… yes.

Great crowd on hand for their picks.
Posted by Crow on 2011/01/13 at 11:01 AM
At least is isn’t Comcast; I hate Comcast so much that I swore (even though I’m a Son of Ben) I would never wear a Philly Union kit with Comcast printed on it.
On the pick- a bit of a reach but we need a GK. We’ll have your back at The River End this year MacMath!
Posted by matthewsf on 2011/01/13 at 11:09 AM
Decent pick by Union. To me, this has resale at some point written on it.
Posted by John on 2011/01/13 at 10:31 AM
Sheattle just sent the 11th pick to Portland and an international roster spot for a 2nd round pick.
Meanwhile …
New England is on the clock.

Pretty amazing he dropped that far. Chicago got a good one.

10th Pick Sporting KC – CJ Sapong F
Posted by Berg on 2011/01/13 at 11:03 AM
Haven’t seen him play but man, with Bunbury, Kamara and Sapong, Sporting KC’s front line is BIG.

Timbers trade 11th pick to Houston for allocation amounts.
11th Houston – Will Bruin
Posted by matthewsf on 2011/01/13 at 11:09 AM
Cough. At pediatrician appt with little miss tsg. Thanks for the updates john.
Love Bruin to Dynamo. Liked Salgado at 1. Think he is more ready than people give him credit for.
More in a bit.
Posted by dth on 2011/01/13 at 11:11 AM
His readiness is immaterial–can’t play for Vancouver until 18, i.e. September.
Posted by matthewsf on 2011/01/13 at 11:14 AM
Not about this year. But I don’t think he needs a few years.
Posted by Berg on 2011/01/13 at 11:14 AM
Dynamo making some good moves today for sure.
Posted by cfig on 2011/01/13 at 3:58 PM
As an Orange fan I am REALLY happy with this draft. Sarkodie should be solid either at outside back or perhaps at an outside midfield spot and Bruin is a perfect understudy to Ching. Great job by Kinnear and co today.
Posted by John on 2011/01/13 at 11:13 AM
12 – CLB Rich Balchan
13 – NY Corey Hertzog
(Sorry, got in an in depth conversation at work)

Word is that Mark Van Bommel has tripped over the 15th MLS pick and appealed for a Penalty.
San Jose to appeal.

Crew have traded a player that will be named and allocation money to San Jose for the 15th so..

18th – Colorado (no media presence in the Denver Post/Newspapers/Media) Rapids – Eddie Ababio D
Posted by Brian on 2011/01/13 at 2:45 PM
Pretty sure Lee Nguyen is cap-tied because of the 2007 Copa America.
Posted by Dave on 2011/01/13 at 8:05 PM
Just wondering if Copa América doesn’t count as official Fifa competition for teams outside of Conmebol? If an invited team were to win it they wouldn’t go to Confederations Cup on that basis, the highest finishing Conmebol team would go.
Posted by Andy_4Lakes on 2011/01/13 at 3:12 PM
Did the entire Akron team go in this draft?
Posted by phlub on 2011/01/14 at 11:39 AM
Wayne Rooney’s little brother… a Red Bull in the second round!
Posted by Crow on 2011/01/14 at 12:17 PM
Wow, Jeff Carlisle gave Philly Union the worst draft grade on espnsoccernet…. hopefully he is wrong. I’m starting to wonder what the plan is to improve the D. Hopefully, they use some of that BIMBO money here soon.
