USA v. Chile Revisited: Selected Images

Once again, TSG photog extraordinaire Matt Mathai (@mathaim) does extraordinary work capturing in stills USMNT action.

HDC is a little tough on the lighting and Matt’s great work speaks to his ability.

Interspersed amongst the photos are some quotes from players in the mixed zone and some observations that just didn’t fit in any piece anywhere.

Enjoy.

Observation:

The loudest cheers, by far, during the starting eleven announcement were reserved for the big Texan centerback who patrols central defense for the Galaxy.

Quote:

Dax: I found out about it [the captain's armband and role], in our pre-game meeting after our pre-game meal. It’s a feeling you know you can’t really describe. It’s a little unexpected.

It’s a feeling of extreme pride and one I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

Quote:

Bob Bradley on Zach Loyd during his press conference:

His ability to compete on plays in that part of the field I thought was excellent. You see it [during the camp], but now it gets put to the test and it’s great when it comes out during the game.

Observation:

Chris Wondolowski clearly reveled in his first cap. TSG and Wondo spoke afterward in the mixed zone off-the-record and Chris was still glowing.

He was animated on the field, offered hearty rousing to his substitute Juan Agudelo in coming off the field, and was the first over to the stands after the match to interact with what was clearly a large support base there to see him.

TSG: Ale. How’d you think you played tonight?

Bedoya: Personally, I think. I didn’t really get the ball as much as I wanted to. In the 1st half, I

And we played down the left side a bit.

I wanted the ball and I was showing up in the spaces. I kind of wanted it too much perhaps, but I didn’t touch the ball as much as I wanted to.

Observation:

There was a pronounced difference in the two fans groups. That is, between the American Outlaws and Sam’s Army. This is not a put-down…again an observation.

The American Outlaw support crowd was raucous and every time the energy ebbed for a minute, a chant or cheer would hurdle from the south end supporter section.

By contract, the Sam’s Army group next to them was few in number and say for most of the match. Attributed to age difference perhaps?

TSG: Seems like the wingers out there were a lot slower than in MLS…kidding?

Franklin: Ha….I doubt that. They were moving. We talked yesterday how their outside guys would come flying in all night.

Bob was 100% correct. They were a handful. Second half we did a better job containing them.

TSG: You took a lot of hits out there tonight, huh?

Bedoya: Oh, I got so beat up, so beat up.

Observation:

A clearly dejected AJ De La Garza, the lone sub not used by Bob Bradley…in De La Garza’s home stadium nonetheless, was one of the first two or three out of the lockeroom.

Press officer Michael Kammarman went over to him and walked him to the bus and could be heard offering “keep your chin” up support to the youngster.

Kammarman is often a gruff guy–it’s part of his job–but that was a great moment.

Quote:

TSG: How tired are you?

Dax: A little heavy legs, but not as bad I thought I would be…especially when you’re playing in front of your home crowd you want to dig in and give it that extra 10 or 15 percent.

Knowing that once that 90 minutes is up you gave it all you got.

Great pictures, that game was fun to watch with all the young talent. I wish you’d gotten the half time festivities. My g/f was one of the three during the trivia game and wanted to see a close up.

Thanks for the photos and they will be nice momentos for the guys most of which will likely never pull the kit on again.

Matt, I really appreciate your talent in preserving memories for this game (which happened to be my family’s first trip to the HDC.) I was also very impressed with the crowd and the facility. Our domestic support has come a long way!
