Champion’s League Live: Man United vs. Chelsea, More

Update: You have to love Sir Alex putting Old Man Giggs in the middle of the field given Chelsea’s shoddy internal defending lately.

Update: Adriano misses two sitters, Donetsk down 1-0 should be at worst equal.

Shaun says he’s not stopping by with live commentary today, but I wouldn’t put it past him.

Chicharito...turning into Mr. Amazing overnight...

Today’s docket:

Barcelona vs. Shakhtar Donetsk

and an EPL

Manchester United vs. Chelsea

—–

Will Barca continue their impressive performances at Camp Nou? Can Donetsk keep the damage minimal on the road?

Manchester United’s striker kitty (Chicharito, Rooney) is starting to looking strikingly more positive than over the summer. Can they put pressure on a Chelsea defense that hasn’t always shown up this year?

Will Fernando Torres drop one in the mesh?

Is it just me or could both EPL teams stand to upgrade significantly? Giggs as a central midfielder? Zhirkov? Bosingwa? The benches?

United 1-Chelsea 0. Midfield battle; goal off of a great Carrick pass to Giggs on the wing, who centered it to Rooney for the finish. Other than that, not a lot of action on goal.

      Not watching Shaktar-Barca.

I think that was United’s only attempt on target. But it was a great goal, with brilliant passing all around and a clinical finish – just shows that you don’t always have to put your foot through the ball to score.

How Torres didn’t score is mind boggling. Then Lampard shins it only for Evra to clear off the line. Have no clue how Chelsea didn’t score from that chance.

Just got going and looks like Rafael is getting toted off by help on a sled and nani comes on in his replacement. Haven’t seen the challenge.

Apparently he was hurt earlier in a Challenge with Drogba, tried to continue and couldn’t.

Meanwhile, Barcelona is doing some “waxing” in their game.

Whoooooo that was a clattering as Ramires for Chelsea gets a yellow for a delightful foul.

Manchester United with a corner given after the play restarts.

United putting presure on as Chech comes out with a flabby finger tip push to keep Hernandez from getting on the end of a cross.

    Drogba off for Anelka.

Interesting….. Does Abromovich have a phone in his box?

Chelsea have 10 minutes left to find a way through.

Meanwhile a high boot by Ferdinand gives them a free kick 30 out.

Lampard fires it through the wall but Van Der Sar has it clutched.

United are just sitting back, soaking up pressure in the midfield and then counter attacking. They have a bit of possession right now and are passing around to hold the ball right now.

Ivanovic goes on a bit of a walk about and fires a shot in that Van Der Sar collects. 5 minutes left.

Penalty shout as a ball comes into the box and Evra hacks down the Chelsea man while getting none of the ball. Ref has none of it and play continues. wow.

Torres gets booked for a dive in the box.

Not sure it was worth a booking but he does make the most of it.

This team is cooked. Drogba was the only attacking presence all day and is subbed out while Abramovich calls down to make sure Legolas stays in the game just in case a goal might find him.
As much as I despise United, my respect for Ferguson’s managerial ability just grows. He just puts the parts in place and starts the engine and they seem to find quality in key moments.
You question Giggs in the middle and then he gets that first touch on a 40 yd cross field ball at full stride in a key position and you realize why he’s in there. Ryan Giggs=pure class.
Park was his usual useful and workmanlike self. Rooney puts it away when he’s in form.
With Lampard and Essien at less than 75% there is no one in the Chelsea side with that level of class to carry them over. Bosingwa was a waste of space. Ramires could hold on a bottom table team but has nothing extra to offer at this level.
Good on United for a classy footballing performance in all phases.
