Across The Pond Through Henry’s Eyes

A four-part “special report” with “exclusive access” to New York Red Bulls’ forward Thierry Henry by Sky Sports. The piece, for me, is really more a commentary on the assumptions and stereotypes of the States and its soccer.

Would be swell if he spent more time in front of the camera on the pitch than in trendy attire.

Juan looked surprised as hell to see that camera crew in the locker room.

I’m half way through the third video and still no mention of anything interesting regarding his current stay at NYRB. Just an fyi. He walks her through the club in the beginning, but nothing substantive is discussed. This is so far, 3 1/2 videos of him talking about his past and the comparison of various subjects (other than soccer) between Europe and NY. If you’re a red bull fan, meh.

Agree completely — part of the reason I posted this was a) NYRB is his employer doesn’t seem on the forefront and b) Henry didn’t really push it in the interview and Sky Sports doesn’t seem interested.

Watched all of them, and actually enjoyed the interview.

First, of all, it’s impossible to tell how much Henry talked about NYRB. They were with him for a week, so the focus of the piece was entirely up to producer to decide with what he/she chose to focus on from hours of tape. Given that Sky has a British audience, who generally don’t care about MLS, it wouldn’t make any sense to focus on NYRB in the piece. And, if the NYRB didn’t make any demands of the producer in order to allow access to TH or their club, they didn’t have any control anyway…

Second, Henry comes across as a really likeable guy.

Third, and most importantly for us American types, the game day segment is particularly interesting and encouraging. In it Henry, seemingly reluctantly, admits that Agudelo is “really interested in learning” and Henry has been spending extra time after practice working with him. That alone is reason enough for Agudelo to spend a few more years @ NYRB before trying to make the leap.
