Update:
US starting XI vs. Colombia:Solo; Le Peilbet, Buehler, Ramone, Krieger; Cheney, Lindsey, Lloyd, O’Reilly; Rodriguez, Wambach
———-
Apologies for no preview here; review coming though.
Carli Lloyd, Alex Morgan and the US ladies take on Colombia today in Game 2 in the Group of Bedoya–don’t ask–in Germany.
Kickoff is set for 9am PT.
The match is sold out at Rhein-Neckar-Arena, making it the first game not involving hosts Germany to be at capacity during the 2011 Women’s World Cup. The stadium is typically home to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Colombia’s team? Just out of diapers with an average age of 21.6. They need the win in this one after falling to Sweden in Game 1.
The starting line-ups shortly.

Looking for a better “looking” effort from Le Peilbet — thought she was fine last time given that Cheney didn’t give her help over the top.

kickoff is 12pm ET, not 9!

US coming out strong. Although, A-Rod’s streak of missing great chances continues.

The US defensive line is almost at the halfline — might be a long day for the Colombians.

Still waiting for Wambach to get the goal that open the floodgates.

15 shots in the first half, 1 goal .. wow

Rapinoe in, Cheney up to forward, A-Rod out. Means we probably won’t be seeing Alex Morgan at least for a while, which is a little disappointing.

Now all we need is a goal from Abby Wambach

Tobin on for HAO .. good match from her.

And Abby Wambach’s bad luck continues…
Posted by Kenny on 2011/07/02 at 10:40 AM
this is incredible .. sure she’s missed some chances but 2-3 of her chances here in the 2nd have been an huge amount of bad luck. a perfect header that hits the defender in the back n a scramble ball that hits the post. incredible.

now she gets a super soft yellow card .. i feel for her.

Hopefully she shakes it off and hits her stride as the tournament continues.

Less concerned about Wambach’s finishing, in other matches some of those go in. More concerning is it seems at times she is being outhustled for rebounds and when the ball turns over. She has old legs (relatively) and against a better backline that she can’t overpower with her strength it could cost.
Not saying she is doing horrible out there but the rest of the team pressures well and is very active. Never was a speed player but this wasn’t her best match. Wishing her luck going forward.

Good showing by the U.S. Would have liked to see Wambach get a goal, but overall, the squad looks good going into the Sweden game.

Entertaining game. I’d heard about the controversy over the USWNT’s uniforms, and whatever you have to say about the feminism part, surely we can all agree they’re ugly.

I like them. They’re different. They accentuate the curves of some of these women. Nothing wrong with that.

What’s the controversy about the uniforms? I like them.
I’m definitely getting concerned about Wambach. I agree with Eric that I feel part of her bad luck might have to do with what feels like her looking slower than usual.

I’m not concerned one bit about lack of scoring for Wambach. Playing great as set up player. Goals coming from loads of places for this USWNT.
Wambach has been masterful at hold up play, distribution, and play making. We’re used to seeing Wambach score goals because no one else did. During qualifying when the squad looked troubling Wambach’s absence was a mark of failure, but now we’re seeing goals from Lloyd, Rapinoe, O’Reilly, and super-sub Morgan.
Certainly I want to see her get her scoring touch, today was unlucky at times, but party the reason we’re seeing less goals from her is because she’s involving her team more. How many times did we see play off passes to on-rushing teammates today? She doesn’t need to force it. She’s still got the heads up play to make them if she’s in the best spot, but this WWC others have been in more favorable positions to score.
Lastly, something like 40 or 50% of Wambach goals have come from headers and while the US used to have a lot of wing play and service from there to set up Abby for headers or a dropped in the box ball for her to hit home, Cheney’s been carrying the ball more inside, and others using the middle of the pitch to attach. USWNT has been surprisingly land-based in this tournament (minus Cheney’s header… which was set up from a Wambach cross!) rather than aerial.
Fret not.. USWNT fans. Wambach still has the same nose for goal… just that others have one too.
