Part III in our continuing review of who TSG will choose for the MLS Awards 2011. Help us out. Add your voice.

Rosales...singled out here...as a lock for newcomer?

Newcomer of the Year

The best newcomer in MLS during the 2011 regular season. For this award, “newcomer” is defined as a player with previous professional experience who made his MLS debut in 2011.

Candidates: (Note: Change in the candidates…only showing those we would consider)

Charlie Davies (DC United)

Luke Rodgers (New York)

Teemu Taino (New York)

Faryd Mondragon (Philadelphia)

Carlos Valdes (Philadelphia)

Diego Chara (Portland)

Jorge Perlaza (Portland)

Simon Dawkins (San Jose)

Mauro Rosales (Seattle)

Erik Friberg (Seattle)

Omar Bravo (Sporting KC)

Joao Plata (Toronto FC)

Eric Hassli (Vancouver)

TSG skinny: Perlaza! Very hard for us not to consider Perlaza here, but alas we need to be objective. Many horses in this race. Both thoroughbreds from Philadelphia Valdes and Mondragon.

Joao Plata obviously deserves mention. He might be the dark horse. Rosales the favorite, but Rodgers also in consideration?

TBH: Given their performances (and the fact that Jorge had a bad back for the last two or three weeks) if you are picking a Portland player that had an impact that person is Chara. He solidified the midfield and once Spencer worked out that Jewsbury/Marcelin could go deep allowed Chara to go box to box. He also had the most fouls in the MLS this year on a team that was NOT aggressive about fouling (at least earlier in the year).

While I think Chara has been an excellent addition, I’d have to point to Mondragon, Rosales and Plato as more deserving.

I–reluctantly–agree that (screw you John Spencer!) that Chara probably had a bigger impact on Portland than Perlaza..

Er, I didn’t mean to say that Chara is newcomer of the year, just that as far as Portland people go, I would pick him over Perlaza.

Given the depth of despair that Toronto found themselves in maybe the answer here for me would be Plata.

  2. As a PTFC fan I love both Chara and Perlaza (especially Chara), but what about Danny Koevermans? 9 goals in maybe half a season for TFC

Seconded — Koevermans was unreal for TFC, and his arrival helped turn their season around.

Wasn’t nominated from Toronto. Went to Frings and Plata. I know–amazing.

Doesn’t Sebastian Miranda deserve some consideration? Let Columbus in minutes played and made very few mistakes. He also had the unenviable task of replacing Crew legend Frankie Hejduk.

  4. Toughest award to decide so far…

Between Rosales & Plata for their contributions throughout the season.

I’d give it to Plata because he meant so much more off the field to the team & fans than you could imagine. Granted Rosales’ filling in for the injured Zakuani is similar, but I don’t think Sounders fans needed the lift the way TFC fans did.

This is a homer pick as well, but let’s face it, he should be up for rookie of the year and can’t because of a silly rule.

    Vamos Platito !
