But you knew it would be a Perlazapalooza fest?
What say you Union without Le Toux? Will Boyd knock one home in his debut? The former Gers player certainly accustomed to striking in the rain.

What’s it going to take to see Darlington Nagbe, #10, I ask??? (just inferring from the lineup that this won’t be the case.)
Posted by matthewsf on 2012/03/12 at 6:29 PM
Nagbe is not strong enough on the ball yet — the few times he ventured inside last year he got knocked off it.
I like how Spencer plays him a little drawn in but not enough to absorb a beating.

I don’t know he’s quick enough to beat people on the outside. A bit of a Dempseyish issue.

Just watched the National Anthem… wow. We need a USMNT game in Portland. Could be like a West Coast answer to the Midwest. Pro-american crowd, not great weather.

Porfiro Lopez is looking like a good acquisition b

I thought he was terrible early on but looked better as the half went on. The Timbers should have had a PK.
Posted by Crow on 2012/03/12 at 9:02 PM
Take that back- he was horrific in the 2nd half again- torched time and time again.
Posted by Jake on 2012/03/12 at 7:44 PM
Sloppy. I know it’s raining but first touches and inaccurate passing plus Toledo allowing everyone to hold and grab made that a boring half to watch.

Sebastien Le Toux was traded to “lock up” contracts and allow more playing time for Danny Mwanga and Roger Torres…. and they are rotting on the bench again.
Why is Farfan not on the wing?
And why are NO defenders on the bench for the Union??!!

Still not sure who Okugo has to murder to get some PT.

LOL I forgot about him as well. Oh well, he’ll be starting for the Olympic team at least.
I needed more than the 3 second roster flash by ESPN3 to decipher the Union lineup. Actually it would take a lifetime of study to understand what the hell goes on in Peter Nowak’s head.
Wow… just wow. Completely outclassed in every way by Portland. What a listless performance. At least if the Union keep playing like this we wont have to worry about Nowak being around long. The only positive to take from this game was Freddy Adu looked pretty good. Why was he substituted? Why was he out wide early on and Farfan and Daniel in the middle??
Good for Portland- I really enjoyed watching the way they play and their crowd is absolutely amazing. I’m sure there are some little kids who will watch a Portland game and see the crowd and be hooked on soccer for life. I wish the Sons of Ben would spend less time defending Nowak to a fault and treating the team/group like a mindless cult and actually improve the game day atmosphere at PPL Park. Its pathetic how far it pales in comparison to Jeld-Wen Field.

Oh and didn’t Peter Nowak read Coaching Set Piece Defending for Dummies in the offseason? I’m glad the Union are so improved on defending set pieces. If it wasn’t for Freddy Adu clearing off the line it would have been 4.
Posted by dth on 2012/03/12 at 9:19 PM
Nowak tried to read it but Hans Backe took the only copy from the library.

ESPN should lose the irritating chiron with scores in other sports and just telecast the game. Sounders or Timbers should get Guzan for keeper. He’s not playing at Villa and there’s only one or two teams in EPL with a keeper deficiency.
@matthewsf – who do you think would be getting an upgrade in the EPL with Guzan as keeper?
Posted by John on 2012/03/14 at 7:45 AM
FYI: At this point I would rather have Perkins than Guzan. At least I know what I am getting.

Nowak has reverted to Philly season 1 and decided they’ll be the Stoke City or 1907s Leeds of MLS. Short on talent and goals. Long on shoving, hard (or reckless) fouls, and pointless long balls. Pray for a set piece goal or two to win it.
The problem is they don’t defend well enough to win games like that. Barring marked improvement (and lets be fair, it is a 9 month season) it could be a long year for Philly.
Fair play to Portland – they were excellent after Philly’s opener and have some pieces that are awfully fun to watch – Jewsbury, Perlaza, Boyd, Al Hassan.

Really great things happened during the game, but the best one happened after the Timbers scored the equalizing goal. Pretty much everyone in our section moved from having the seat in the back of their calves/legs to having the seat in front of them in the front of their legs.
It seemed like the collective group of people moved from standing back to standing forward and just piling pressure, singing louder and believing. Really fantastic comeback from the Timbers, and a wonderful time in the liquid sunshine.

It was fantastic. I had my parents who are only mildly interested in soccer watch the game just to witness the atmosphere. I am very envious- I wish I could be a Portland fan sometimes, or just wish the atmosphere in Philly (and everywhere) was the same.

“This is not my team. This is our team,” said Henry. “Here’s the thing you don’t understand. In America, you guys love individual stuff. It is a team effort when you win the game, nothing to do with individual.”

And…Sounders display their typical clutch form when involved in a big game. Is this is a Sigi Schmid problem or a personnel problem or what?
