so i asked some MLS homers where they thought this team would play in England and where on the table they would finish.

They answers in the EPL and that they would be anywhere from a 6th place finish to middle of the table.

I told them this is preposterous and it would be kind to say that they would be a mid-level to playoff championship side.

I was called the usual euro-snob crap.

so where do you guys think they would finish? I can only count one player on this team that would start in the EPL and that’s Donovan. Henry and Beckham are not every game players in the EPL anymore.

That team is a relegation battling side — they are kind of Blackburn.

what players would have made the blackburn squad? Certainly none of them would start for Blackburn.

I think Beckham, Donovan and Henry start at time for Blackburn — occasionally DeMerit. Last year, Blackburn wanted Beckham. They also have few forwards.

sorry. I meant to say which players besides Donovan, Henry, and Beckham. Those three would start. But i actually think they are the only players on MLS All Stars that could make an EPL roster.

DeMerit was only offered Championship offers the year he left for Vancouver. Neither MLS All Star goalkeeper would get on an EPL roster. None of the forwards would. Eddie Johnson struggled at Preston North End.

Given Blackburn’s selection of central defenses this year and where DeMerit is on form, he’d start in a heartbeat.

            • If Ream had stayed with NYRB would he even be on this all-star team?

When he left most of you thought he would fail miserably.

Yet, after a fairly short adjustment period, he was pretty much a regular for Bolton. Some of that was Bolton sucked and were short on center halves but as far as I can tell Ream did not look out of place playing center half in the EPL.
So the question is, are these guys better players than T. Ream?

Your question is hard to answer since some of these MLS all-stars might just be able to find a perfect fit for them as Ream did.

Also do you mean start all season be a regular or just start occasionally? I’ll bet most of these guys could start a game or two or three but anything more gets back to the situation we spoke about before, i s there a fit for them at that particular club.

It’s not just about talent alone.

              Didn’t Bolton Wanderers get relegated?

    • Where would they stack up in the ’11-12 EPL season? It would depend a lot on the chemistry of the players and what tactical system the coach lines them up in, but I would expect this team to put up a decent game against any team in the bottom half.

I’d put them as high as 10th (Norwich) and as low as 19th (Blackburn) but Wolves were so bad last year you’d have to assume they’d finish at least higher than that lot. The Prem as a whole is so talented and moneyed that it’d be a crapshoot at best anyways.

i just don’t see any players besides Donovan, Beckham, and Henry that would make an EPL roster. Demerit is a bit of a stretch considering when he signed with Vancouver 2 yrs ago he didn’t receive any EPL offers.

    Beitashour———————–Pearce(?)
    ——————–Alonso——————-
    Beckham——————————Zusi
    ——————De Rosario—————
    ——————————-Pontius——-
    —————–Wondolowski————–

Not really sure what to do with this line-up. Toss-up between DeMerit and Valdes at CB. Toss-up again between Alonso and Beckerman at DM. De Rosario and Henry occupy pretty much the same space on the pitch, so do both start? DeRo is arguably more important to this side than Henry and he has great chemistry with Pontius. Or do you play Donovan up top with Wondolowski instead?

Or do you do a 4-3-3 with a front 6 like this:

    ———–Beckerman——Alonso————-
    ——————–De Rosario——————-
    Donovan——————————–Pontius
    ——————-Wondolowski—————–

Or one of Beckerman/Alonso could be swapped out for Zusi for a more attacking midfield formation with DeRo/Zusi in front of the DM. Though I shudder to think of Wondolowski as the center striker in a 4-3-3.

    Decisions, decisions for Olsen.

Strategy is a different discussion than the starting line-up. Donovan IS GOING TO START in the MLS All-Star game, regardless of whether that gives the team the best chance to win. There is no way that MLS brass is going to allow Henry, Beckham, and Donovan to sit out in favor of De Rosario, Zusi, Pontius and the like.

That’s not to say this would be the best possible line-up, but the MLS is too large a control freak about its image and prestige, etc., to have what it considers its shining stars and cash cows not starting before a national audience in its all-star game.
