Terrible defending by Koscielny on the Torres goal. Completely turns his back on the ball in the air allowing Torres to score.

Agreed. But the match-ups in general were poor.

Another game lost on 2 set pieces – I think Chelsea only created one chance in open play [Torres' offside goal].

Have to say I love the Mata/Hazard/Oscar combo. It’s a wonder what spending absurd amounts of money can do for your team.

I thought Hazard was disappointing today. Seemed to disappear for stretches. Mata was great.

Still don’t understand why that spending wasn’t done last summer when they brought in AVB.

Yeah, I thought Hazard started well, but sometimes I forgot that he was on the field. However, some of the skill / decisionmaking he showed was fantastic.

He has seemed much less assertive since Oscar came into the lineup a few games ago. He was the full focus of the attack down the left in the first 5 games or so and thrived with that much of the ball. I think he’ll settle back into it and reminds me of Silva in his ability to make much out of little in tight spaces.

Bigger issue is Mikel’s less than avg contribution in the #6 role. Still think Essien would have been able to give 2 more above avg seasons in that reduced role with massive upside in distribution. Can’t believe he’s gone….

Can not believe the impact that Oscar has had since getting on.

That said, I think teams now are making sure to take care of the defensive responsibilities on Hazard first. So he’s opening it up for others. Hence, Mata having a great game.

DTH- Keep in mind its still how and what you spend absurd amounts of money on. Liverpool spent an absurd amount of money a few seasons back and have nothing but Suarez to show for it now that Carroll/Adams etc are all gone.
BTW- DiMatteo seems to really have a good grasp of this squad right now. Even Ramires looks to be playing in a more controlled, disciplined role than in the past.
And then there is the 5 yr extension for Luiz???……still cannot figure out what they saw and are seeing with him. Makes 2-3 abysmally stupid defensive mistakes in key areas a game.

Come on YOU SPURS!..what a fantastic offensive game but wow what awful defending both ways. Jonny Evans must have some pics of Fergie. And Ferdinand is a traffic cone out there.

Going to be a very entertaining team to watch this season but man do they have to shore up the back. Kyle Walker looked like the moment was a bit too big for him in that last 30 mins.

That Spurs/United game was one of the best games I’ve watched in some time.

My word Gareth Bale- what a player.

Of course Dempsey’s goal was easy but he showed good composure taking it- such a great run up to it- the ‘cheeky flick’ by Dempsey to start the break, the outstanding hold up play by Defoe (take a lesson Altidore) and great pass…. and well Bale actually should have passed the ball but at least his shot forced a rebound.

BTW if you didn’t see Ba’s goal against Reading today go find it…over the right shoulder full stride RIGHT FOOTED volley that he spanks past keep from 15 yrds out. Technically nearly impossible to execute and he just makes it look like he’s on the training ground.

Another start for Guzan. Lambert may not be sold on Lichaj but seems to be convinced by Guzan.

    Reply

    • When Guzan surprised everyone by re-signing with Villa he said Lambert told him that he would have a fair shot at the starting job. That would have been the ideal since Guzan was comfortable there and familiar with everything and after all, it was an EPL club.

Either Guzan was a fool for believing Lambert’s lies or Lambert was in fact being honest. Now we know Lambert was being honest.

Guzan’s signing should have been a sign to Given that Lambert expected him to fight for his job. This is another way of saying we are not completely happy with you

In that same way Lambert signing first Lownton, a right back and then Bennett, a left back, must have put Lichaj on notice that he, like Given was on trial. And I’m sure JK knew what that meant.

Which explains why JK has been leaving Eric at Villa to fight for a job.

It seems like both Villa incumbents have lost their jobs to the challengers. Guzan probably keeps that job and Given is probably gone by January. Given makes too much money to be sitting on Villa’s bench.

Depending on how you look at it, Lichaj may have been keeping left back warm for Bennett until he could get match fit or he may have been given a legitimate shot to win the job.

In any case, if Bennett keeps the job and Lichaj sticks around, Eric will probably be their utility defender/midfielder; the John OShea/ Jon Spector role. So unless he wants to be the next Frankie Simek, he may have to move to get serious consideration for the USMNT.

The problem is Lichaj at best is a fill in left back. On the right he can be an outstanding player. I don’t care if he goes to the championship- he needs to go somewhere that he gets the opportunity to develop at his strongest position. Have Mr. Underwhelming Lownton play LB and see what happens.

        • Your key phrase is “On the right he can be an outstanding player. “ Woulda, coulda, shoulda.

The problem is Lichaj is not an outstanding player NOW. If Lownton is underwhelming fine but Lichaj could not beat him out for the RB so what does that say about Lichaj?

You may be right about Eric but Lambert and Villa need to win now. They need their best players out there now.

And it seems Lichaj is not their best right or left back now. He may be one day but Lambert and Villa can’t risk waiting around to find out. That is how the business works. The players who can do it for you now play and the rest sit and wait or get cut.

Lambert and Villa are not paid to develop right backs for the USMNT. If Eric was good enough he would force them to develop him but he is not.

Lichaj sure has looked good when given a run at RB. He was the best player on the pitch for USA vs Colombia and was outstanding vs Paraguay. Has Villa given him a shot at RB?

            • Yes. I believe most of his ten starts last year were at right back in place of the injured or ineffective Hutton.

Saw Tim Howard’s terrible error on the highlight show. Hope he leaves those in Europe and not when he suits up for the US.

:( I”m afraid that Bolton will be so far behind when Holden gets back they might not have a shot at promotion. Hopefully, Holden can just stay healthy and get back to the level he was at and we will see what happens from there. Such a good guy- he deserves it.

Did you see the penalty decision? It was a tough one on Dortmund as Subotic’s arm was extended but it was fired at him from very close with little time to move his arm either way.

  10. Can we get a save Dan Kennedy movement started? Every time I see a Chivas game or highlights I have terrible flashbacks to playing goalie and getting slaughtered because the rest of the team was too hungover.

Junior Flores signing with Dortmund is very cool news. It’s no secret I love ‘em to death. That said, one interesting issue with the club: for all the young talent on the team, they’re better at buying/finding other teams’ young talent than developing it themselves. So hopefully Flores is more like Marvin Ducksch/Goetze/Sahin than, well, the rest of ‘em.

The are some great match ups this weekend.

    Barcelona vs. Real Madrid
    Inter vs. Milan
    Crystal Palace vs. Burnley
    Marseille vs. PSG
    Newcastle Utd. vs. Man Utd

I put an accumulator bet on for five home wins.

MB90 starts for Roma today. Looks like he’ll be called up for the USMNT now and we can all hope that against A&B we see MB90 partnering Danny Williams in midfield.

Just read that Shea will not be called in and that Donovan may not be after picking up an injury against RSL. Looks like we’ll get to see if Zusi can continue to play at a high level with the national team. Hopefully he puts in another couple of good performances and we can start putting him in as an automatic choice when healthy/on form.

This has become must watch TV. Not a supporter of either squad but look forward to watching the compelling plot lines (Spain Nats, Moronhio vs The World, etc)and just fantastically old school all in football.
Ronaldo is just a man among men and proves it over and over. Messi is a force.

Nats website says 7pm Fri 10/12 televised on beIN. Went to set up DVR and there is no mention of USMNT v A & B at 7pm or ANYWHERE on Friday night. Is this a freaking joke or what? How did they sell the rights to a channel with zero interest in televising the games? This is Bettmanesque in its stupidity…

You’re confusing your beIN’s I believe. USMNT is live at 7 on Bein Sports 1 which you can only get through the satellite companies. If you have Comcast then you get Bein espanol which isn’t showing the USMNT game live and the delayed showing isn’t up yet. Both Bein and Comcast can go screw themselves for this.

The USMNT didn’t sell these rights to the games. They were sold by the home countries to Bein. That’s why US home games are on ESPN and some of the away games used to be on PPV.

Doesn’t specify beIN Sports 1 on the website schedule. I went to beIN esp and found no reference or scheduled showing later. Which prompted my rant…
point being that the current system for TV rights is just f’d up. The beIN third world quality and viewing schedule just ices the cake…
