Nelson Mandela will make an appearance before the game (but watching it from home). It will probably be one of his last public appearances. I have no idea what to say about this amazing man.

Back soon with the lineups

———————————-

Interestingly it turns out that everyone’s favorite Sneijder is a bit of a dick where as Van Bommel calls his wife and children before every game and tells them he loves them and thst he is trying to win the game for them….AWWWWW.

We’re at the Phoenix for this one but we would like to thank both Danny Coyles and Phoenix for hooking us up and providing excellent venues to watch these wonderful games. If you are out of town and ever come to beautiful SF, be sure to check out these two bars!

This is it. Game number 64, the final one, the big one. Spain versus Holland.

Group H game 4 – Spain versus Honduras

Getting very beat up!

PEEEEEEP PEEEEEP PEEP. Well this sets up for a very exciting finale for Group H. Chile could very well not go through with 6 points as they meet up with Spain. Switzerland need a win if they are to have any chance.

3 minutes of extra time.

90:00 - Some incredible build up by Spain as they just tease the Honduran defenders with some slick passing and well timed runs. In the end the final ball to Mata is a touch too strong. They are really a joy to watch when the defense is so welcoming!

87:00 – Navas sends in a great cross that Villa should have hit firs time to get his hat trick but he controls it and as he shoots Mendoza slides in and takes the ball off him.

86:00 – Spain playing very loose, as they are giving balls away needlessly.

84:00 – Honduras win a corner but before they take it, Jerry Palacios comes on for Suazo.

81:00 – Welcome gets a chance as he heads a free kick in the general direction of the goal. It bounces wide as Casillas has to wake up from his nap to gather the ball for a goal kick.

79:00 – Pique slowly getting covered up in band aids. He’s beginning to resemble a mummy!

76:00 – Arbeloa on, Ramos off. He’s had a great game and had many opportunities, but his final touch was not quite there.

75:00 – Villa desperate to get his third tries to race onto a Navas pass that he originally set up but the ball was too strong.

70:00 - Torres off, Mata on. He’s had a poor game by his standards. He needs a goal, but that will come in due time.

68:00 – Spain get a few corners in a row, Ramos has a volley deflected behind then Navas (who has been a real difference in this game) has a weak header saved.

Group H game 2 – Spain versus Switzerland

The Swiss defense, harder to break than one of their national banks

PEEEEEEEEEEP PEEEEEP PEEEP. Game over. The upset of the tournament so far as Switzerland beat Spain for the first time and share the top of the group with Chile!

96:00 – Spain now with a corner.

95:00 -  Yakin handles the ball and gets a yellow for his efforts. Spain get a free kick in a dangerous area. Its wasted by Alonso but Spain get it back.

94:00 - Nervy here. Benaglio is throwing himself around with reckless abandon. He’s braver than William Wallace!

93:00 - Barnetta off for Switzerland He’s been immense. Eggimann on.

91:00 – Yellow card for the Swiss keeper for time wasting!

5 minutes of extra time. Cow bells a ringing all over Switzerland.

88:00 – A sign that you have been injured for the past two months. Torres is presented with a chance to go one on one but his touch fails him and he prods it too far.

85:00 - Spain still being forced out wide. They’re trying a Plan B by shooting from outside the box which should leave space to penetrate with their slick passing. Too little too late?

82:00 – Switzerland pressing now as Spain are leaving themselves vulnerable to the counter attack. Barnetta is the main culprit as his first shot goes over the bar. Moments later he gets another chance and wins the Swiss a corner.

It will rain tears of sorrow in the plains of Spain

Will he lift up the World Cup Trophy July 11th?

The other Guardian publication came out with this article a couple of weeks ago about 6 great teams that never won the world cup. It’s a good read and it got me thinking about other great teams, club and country that had it all but couldn’t capture the big prize. Most recently Barcelona came to mind in this years Champions League. They were an incredible team but couldn’t get it together nor break through Mourinho’s well orchestrated defensive tactics and lost over two legs in the semis.

Spain are a fantastic team. As of now they are the favorite amongst most pundits and bookies to hoist the cup on July 11th. They won Euro 2008 beating holders Greece, Italy and Russia en route to a 1-0 final against Germany. Between the end of 2006 and the summer of 2009, Spain went unbeaten in 35 international matches until they lost to the US in the semis of the Confederations Cup. Since that 2-0 loss in South Africa they have won their last 9 games. That is 1 loss in 45 games!!! This is a great team and a great team that will not win the world cup in 2010.
