And You Thought USA vs. MEX Was Contentious

This upcoming Henry trip is nothing compared to what is going on off the pitch

Courtesy of my SF Black Sox teammate Chris Hanson (and brewer of the “Dax McCarty” beer), comes an absolute great link showing just how, well, hostile the French-Irish qualifier this weekend is getting.

First, you had French coach Raymond Domenech call Ireland “England’s B team.”

Then, you had Richard Dunne absolutely lambast Domenech for doing oh-so-little with oh-so-much talent.

(Note to TSG readers, take everything after this point with a grain of salt….if that didn’t occur already.)

Now, today’s letter-writing fisticuffs between the two “governments” over seats to the match.

This is the first time on TSG that I have labeled something a must read.

Thanks Chris.

    Quite probably, but sheer genius.

It would have been better if the Irish blog got a French blog to distribute it — that would have been even better.

Yes, and obvious fake, but totally hi-larious.
I’m with the concensus re: Domenech’s coaching ability, but I also looked up the original comments that Domenech supposedly made about Ireland being an England B squad. He called them “Angleterre bis”, not B’s.
He got hammered on that one unfairly as all he was referring to is the squad being made up EPL players. It got messed up in translation, though everyone seems happy to overlook that.

On an only obliquely related note, here’s a pretty hilarious photo of Sarkozy imagined as part of the 98 French team:
(The photos were inspired by Sarkozy recently claiming to be a bit more involved in the fall of the Berlin wall than he actually was… a bit a la Clinton claiming to land in Bosnia under sniper fire.)

and then again, if you really want to see nasty, MX/US and IR/FR don’t really count for squat when you see what’s going on between Algeria and Egypt. Wow.
