2009: Columbus Alive as States Downs El Tri

Ching: Yoeman work up top for the Yanks

One year ago today, the United States laid the hurt on Mexico…and Sven Goran Erickson I might add…in a packed Columbus, Ohio. Congrats Columbus by the way, hell of a soccer town. A solid 2-0 victory at home to open up the final round of CONCACAF qualifcation.

Interesting formation for the United States as they came out–if I remember correctly–in a 4-4-2 with Landon pairing Ching up top, but Beasley, Lando himself and Dempsey all took turns running off Ching.

Lot of wide play in this game as well.

Some other thoughts:

• An extremely active DaMarcus Beasley in this one. Time to find your form again son.

• Michael Bradley did a Costa Rica and knocked in a ball that was knocking around in the box. His 90th minute strike from 25 yards or so off a post-up and dish from Big Jeezy helped along a string of games where Bradley thought he was Zidane or something and started volleying from the half line.

• Boca was in the middle on this one again and was serviceable but also let a lot of play come into his area.

Where was Jozy for this one? Has he only been in the mix for less than a year?

Jozy came off the bench and was in the buildup for the second goal. But with him not getting playing time for Xerez, Bob Bradley didn’t consider him match fit and preferred to go with the more experienced Ching who would also give him more possession. Jozy didn’t start any final round qualifying games until the 3rd game, a few days after he came on as a sub and scored against El Salvador. Then of course he scored the hat trick against Trinidad and has been starting most of the games since.

This was the first game I ever went to.

Needless to say, I am hooked.

    • The first one I went to was USA – Mexico in Columbus in 2005. Phenomenal experience and got me even more hooked on the national team.

One of the amazing things about this game to look at is who the other starters were. Some people might remember that Sasha Klejstan was Bradley’s center mid partner (he actually did pretty well), but few remeber who the starting outside backs were (Hejduk and Pearce). We survived some shaky moments from the outside before taking control of the match. I don’t remeber which Mexican player it was, but he beat Pearce and had a great chnce to score in the 1st few minutes, but he choked. It was a fun match to be at, this being my 2nd US Mexico qualifyer in Columbus and I had fun with the AO’s before the match.

I was lucky enough to attend with my brother and dad. I came from CT, my dad flew in from CA, and my bro drove down from rural Ohio. I’ll never forget that experience–truly special.
