Landon’s Goal: Big T’s Celebration

The video, not words, speaks volumes...

My apologies. For some reason Tim Howard’s curt celebration of Landon Donovan’s goal has just been etched in my mind as the defining moment of Sunday’s Hull City-Everton match.

A huge TSG thank you to community member Jennifer for locating the video.

The quality may be grainy, but the authenticity comes through crystal clear. Check out the lead up to Donovan’s goal and the crowd chanting “U-S-A.” at 36 mins and then head to 37:10 for Howard’s exaltation.

For the impatient, Tim H celebrates at about 39:15…

  2. Thanks for this

‘curt’? His celebration was as enthusiastic as I’ve ever seen from him.

I was in Mexico City until yesterday, and when a couple of people I chatted with learned that I was from the US, they asked about Donovan and whether he was coming back to LA. For some reason I didn’t think it was a story outside of the US and Liverpool, but apparently it is.

Well apparently LD is more famous in Mexico than USA. Check out that Mexican Lotto commercial he did where the border guard pulls off his disguise and shouts Landon Donovan! How many cops in USA would know who he is without looking at his driver’s license first?

The Tim Howard celebration is great as it is so genuine. Both Wahl and Ives were at the game and later learned that LD’s stay has been so successful due to Howard and Neville embracing him with open arms, which filtered down to the whole Everton team (see Rodwell cradling LD twice in that game). This was in major contrast to his time in Germany where the players had a sink or swim attitude toward him and were not open to him joining their team. His time in the EPL as been so fun for me to watch and I am really sad that it will end this weekend. I have really gained a lot respect for LD over the last 10 weeks.

That’s because in the EPl, each team is like a brotherhood. Of course there are always the internal problems. But if ever one leaves that brotherhood and rapes that brotherhood in a league match by scoring 4 golazos, then said scorer of golazos will 9 times out of 10 pay respects to their former brotherhood by refusing to celebrate. . . .that is, unless your last name is Adebyass. Or the fans hated you for some reason.

I think I let out an excited chuckle each time Rodwell picked up Lando (once after LD’s goal then again after LD’s assist to Rodwell).
And it’s one thing for the crowd to be chanting “USA”, but did anyone else notice Phil Neville joining in? C’mon Bruce, let the kid stay for chrissakes… especially after you called for it following the debacle in 2006.
