Group H Game 1 – Chile versus Honduras

Will we see this celebration today from TSG's potential breakout player of the tournament?

Well Chile win but they could have won by 4 or 5 if it wasn’t for some fine defending and goal keeping by the Honduran back line.

93:00 – A brief attacking moment for Honduras results in them losing the ball and Gonzalez runs for the counter but his shot (once again a pass would have been the better idea) is over.

91:00 – Gonzalez really trying to impress “el loco” by taking two hasty shots that go above the bar and wide, when passing might have been the better option. Not the best way to to get noticed.

3 minutes of extra time

89:00 – Georgie Welcome (a very fun name to say) tries a shot from outside the box but it’s over the bar.

87:00 – Mark Gonzalez on Valdivia limps off.

81:00 – Chile take of Vidal and put on Contreras.

79:00 – Chile really laying siege upon the Honduran goal but they bravely defend it and it’s still 1 – 0.

75:00 – Vidal has a shot and Valladres parries it out back into play; Sanchez though controls with his hand (looked purposeful and should have been a card) as Valdivia tries to knock it in. The side line judge see’s it though and raises his flag.

69:00 – Honduras might be left wanting in attack but their defense is superb. They have impeccable timing when it comes to sliding tackles and last second clearances in their penalty box to deny Chile a second goal. To be fair to them, they aren’t trying to park the bus (and not are not) but Chile’s attack is relentless.

67:00 – Hendry on, Guevara off for Honduras.

64:00 – SAVE OF THE TOURNAMENT so far by Valladares as from a free kick the ball is headed across the face of goal and Chilean defender Ponce heads it hard that Valladares dives to his right and saves it from point blank range. Excellent by the Honduran keeper.

62:00 – All Chile as Sanchez runs on to a ball and dances into the penalty box but he drags his shot wide. That was a great chance that was squandered.

60:00 – Pavon is off and Welcome is introduced for Honduras. I wonder if he is warm? On a related note my brain is fried.

57:00 – Sanchez down after a strong Palacios challenge, though it was the accidental stamp by Chavez on the Udinese forward that caused the referee to stop play.

52:00 – Chile quickly becoming my new favorite team as they dance and skip their way into the penalty area. Kudos to Honduras who are defending very well. Chile have a shot which is well saved by Valladares but the offside flag is off.

48:00 – A lovely run by TSG breakout kid Alexis Sanchez as he weaves through two players and sends a great pass to goal scorer Beausejour but Figueroa makes a beautiful last second sliding tackle to stop the potential shot on goal.

Chile kick off the second half

Halftime. Well that was entertaining and certainly woke me up.

46:00 – Honduras get a free kick opportunity about 38 yards out. Nunez’s free kick like the Chilean one early in the game, is up and over the wall and Bravo does well to put it out for a corner.

44:00 – Whenever Honduras go forward, Chile counter with lightning quick speed. This time after some sharp inter change of passing Sanchez’s shot is deflected up in the air and some brave keeping by Valladares ensures its not 2 -0.

42:00 – Beausejour tries to recreate the earlier goal by latching on to an inch perfect pass by Valdivia but his cross is cut out at the near post and goes out for a throw in.

37:00 – Chile right back on their horse and some fast paced runs and a nifty back heel almost lead to a second but they have to settle for a corner.

34:00 – GOOOOOOAAAAL. BEAUSEJOUR. It was going to happen. Isla gets behind the defenders down the wing with a beautiful pass and sends it across goal. Beausejour slides in at the near pass and stabs it home. Chile 1 – Honduras 0

31:00 – This is turning into a tennis match. One team breaks and tries the killer pass and it’s excellently intercepted and then the other team counters and repeat. In the end Figueroa up ends a Chilean defender bit no foul is called and it goes out for a goal kick

27:00 – Meanwhile not too much has happened in the game. Its fast paced and somewhat end to end but the final ball for both teams has been poor, so the keepers have not really been tested.

25:00 – Jonathan Bornstein’s reputation might have taken a hot in recent weeks due to his poor display for the USMNT but he’s still and always will be a hero in Honduras. Apparently they’re talking statues!

21:00 – The vuvuzela iPhone ap is awesome (Vuvuzela 2010). It’s based on shaking the phone which is fantastic. Dog looks at me annoyed! I wonder if i can get this as my ringtone?

18:00 – Honduras through Alvarez attack on the counter. The ball comes to Pavon whose shot is weak and just wide of Bravos net. Pavon has a ridiculous International goal scoring record with 57 goals in a 101 matches. Heskey he is not!

17:00 – Healey just informs us there is a Vuvuzela application for the iPhone. In fact there are several. Downloading one now!

13:00 – Oh My, Chile are exciting to watch. Lots of quick little passes that are carving up the Honduran defense. Unfortunately the last pass by Valdivia is a too little hard and it goes out for a goal kick.

7:00 – Honduras make their first foray forward but the shot is scuffed and straight to the keeper

4:00 – All Chill in these early minutes as they win a corner. Got a good feeling about this game. After the corner, Honduras clear, Palcios gets fouled and Carmona gets a yellow card.

Known for his crazy formations, "El Loco" is certainly attack minded

2:00 –  Free kick and Fernandez sends a beautiful shot that dips over the wall and it lands on top of the net. Close one.

TWEEEEEEEET and they’re off

BOO….both Suazo’s on the bench.

Line ups

Chile: Bravo, Isla, Medel, Ponce, Vidal, Millar, Carmona, Fernandez, Sanchez, Valdivia, Beausejour.
Subs: Pinto, Fuentes, Contreras, Suazo, Gonzalez, Estrada, Orellana, Jara, Fierro, Tello, Paredes, Marin.

Honduras: Valladares, Mendoza, Chavez, Figueroa, Izaguirre,Wilson Palacios, Guevara, Alvarez, Nunez, Espinoza, Pavon.
Subs: Canales, Johnny Palacios, Bernardez, Thomas, Suazo, Welcome, Garcia, Martinez, Sabillon, Turcios, Escober.

Chile are a fun and exciting team to watch and the World Cup being a little low on goals and excitement, this group should be exciting…and it has Switzerland in it.

Well if i can get up for Slovakia versus New Zealand I can certainly get up for this one.

Chile are very entertaining. They play positive, attractive soccer.

And give Honduras credit as well. They are certainly not trying to take the air out of the ball.

Gorgeous soccer by Chile taking advantage of their width and five in the midfield.

Honduras is not experienced enough not to get sucked into Chile’s tempo.

Palacious for one needs to slow it down and demand the ball back multipe times after linking.

…and remember Alexis Sanchez was TSG’s breakout player of the tournament (Maicon was tourney’s best).

(And apologies here, but John Harkes is completely intimidated here by Martin Tyler. He’s stepping on Tyler’s describing of the game and forgetting that he does analysis. He’s making grandiose statements instead of explaining why player x did y.

I know some asked us to lay off Harkes and I know Shaun has curbed his tongue, but this is a storyline–admiteddly a secondary one, but…)

Matt – Healey is commentating not Tyler. I think Harkes is actually getting better but he needs to take some pauses.

Yeah (just got back from gym) – I realized it wasn’t tyler at the gym.

Note to self – don’t comment on 4am games- leave that to the experts.

    Wow what a save!

  5. Tom, you’re right! That was amazing! Valladeres kept Honduras in this. Go, CONCACAF!
