Orange Wedges: USA vs. Ghana

Orange Wedges is TSG’s “gameday” post that  is updated until kick-off.

Will the States turn Ghana into Glass Joe? It’s knockout time World Cup 2010.

The United States faces Ghana today at Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg  in South Africa at 2:30PM Eastern today on ABC and Univision. Victor faces the winner of today’s Uruguay vs. South Korea match-up

• Steve Goff at the Washington Post is reporting that a reliable source says Yanks will stick with their Battle of Algiers backline of Cherundolo, DeMerit, Bocanegra, Bornstein. Given that Grant Wahl is “predicting” this line-up and they’re both in the media caravan this sounds about right.

• All 23 US players are available to play against Ghana. Three substitutes allowed as always.

• 75F and sunny today in Rustenburg with no humidity. Temperature will drop some before kickoff. In short, perfect, non-taxing soccer weather.

    So nervous!

And I know that we should take it 1 game at a time, but Uruguay scoring early just made our road to the semis a little tougher (i.e. South Korea would be a better team for us to face).

Gooch out today would be bad news, I would think that him not playing today pretty much means the tournament is over for him. Could be wrong but, Bornstein is starting over Gooch? sounds like that knee just flat out was not ready.

    Ghana’s skilled midfielders + 1 v 1 + Bornstein = makes me nervous

… if Jonny B starts, let’s hope he can ride some confidence gained against Algeria.

Excellent goal Korea! Keep it up!

  5. After watching the last match again I have to concede that JB played well within the gameplan he was supposed to play. Have to admit when I am wrong.

Still lamenting the fact that we didn’t get ahead in one of our games comfortably so that Goodson, Spector, or DMB (at LB) could get some quality time. Yes I know how Spector played for his club but it would be nice to have another option. We still have that yellow to Demerit looming over us (knock on a hard-piece of wood). I think in the next few rounds some teams are going to really dislike the yellow card hold-over rule change, let’s hope it isn’t us.

On the plus side I think Boca and Demerit will be the best combo choice to deal with switching off on Gyan. Guessing that this was as big of a factor than Gooch’s sub par play.

  6. Ready to BELIEVE in this team no matter who plays.
Having flashbacks of “The Speech” right now “That’s a team gentleman….” Hope BB let his players look at some of the Don’t tread videos.

Bornstein again!? Seems like tempting fate here.

    No handballs, Johnny!

listening to studio 90 extra time with demerit, he was mentioning how including swapping bornstein for gooch gave them a quicker back four with a better ability to press and maintain a higher line. so if the strategy is to press and try to eliminate the gap b/w the midfield and back four that would make sense. reading between the lines, it sounds like Gooch keeping the guy onsides for the Slovenia goal 2 might have been the last straw.

Wahl is saying that he nailed the lineup… which is this…

Howard; Cherundolo, DeMerit, Bocanegra, Bornstein; Donovan, Bradley, Clark, Dempsey; Altidore, Findley

I was thinking he would go back with Clark.

About to leave for the gathering at the bar. Polished off a nice USA West Coast IPA from San Diego.

Why go back to Clark? Edu is a much better player and everybody but Bradley knows it. Even Clark knows it.

I am also disappointed by the Findley choice. Wastes his speed because he can’t do anything with his final ball.
