Round of 16 – Spain versus Portugal

Can the divine soul patch add to his goal tally

PEEEEEP PEEEP PEEP. Game over. Spain versus paraguay in the last quarter

89:00 – Red card for Costa for an apparent elbow. That was unbelievable acting by Capdevilla. If that isn’t a call for post match cards for diving then I don’t know what is.

87:00 – Llorente beats the offside trap and heads just wide.

85:00 – Spain maintaining insane amounts of ball possession. Ronaldo has been marked out of this game and has been largely ineffective.

77:00 – Villa now has the self belief that he is god and tries an audacious shot from pretty far out. He comes close but Eduardo easily punches clear.

70:00 – Sergio Ramos is released by Xavi and hammers a shot goal bound but Eduardo does well to save. He’s defender everyone!

63:00 – GOOOOAAAALLLL. Villa on his second effort, sends it in the back of the net. A lovely backheel from Xavi releases Villa whose first shot is saved but he gets the rebound and buries it. Spain 1 – Portugal 0

61:00 – Villa then tries his luck from distance but his curling shot is inches wide.

61:00 – Llorente makes an immediate impact by diving for a cross with his head. It’s well saved by Eduardo.

60:00 – Torres off, Llorente on. Danny comes on for some on Portugal.

57:00 – Spanish defense looking rocky as Portugal begin to impose themselves.

52:00 – Keystone cops action in the Spanish box as a bouncing deflected ball almost ricochets into Casillas goal.

Tweet second half underway. Phoenix does a great steak sandwich if anyone is interested.

Halftime equals more food and drink

1 minute of extra time

45:00 – Steak sandwich is amazing. This game is way too calculated Hopefully in the second half they will open up!

40:00 – Food arrived as well as third Guinness!

38:00 – Spain dominating the game but Portugal have had the best chances. A Portuguese goal will certainly liven things up.

28:00 – What is wrong with Casillas? Is his girlfriend behind him again? He comically bobbles a Ronaldo freekick. Yes, you and I would have done the same or at the very least wet ourselves…but this is Madrid’s number 1!

21:00 – Coentrao brings the ball up and passes to Tiago who takes a stinging shot that Casillas, who has been very unimpressive so far, parries it up and has to punch clear a second time before Almeida can head it in.

18:00 – Portugal get a freekick. Ronaldo waves off his compatriot and take sit himself…straight at Casillas

13:00 – Torres with an impressive bit of skill as he one times a short corner by spinning around a 180 degrees but his shot is just over.

9:00 – Wonder what the collective weight of hair gel is on the 22 players out there…any guesses?

7:00 – Coentrao scampers down the wing and wins a corner. He’s been one of the Portugals best players so far this cup.

5:00 – All Spain as they try and test the Portuguese keeper early

2:00 – Torres curls a shot in and brings a fine save from Eduardo. Liverpool striker needs to have a good game.

On a separate note this is fantastic. French team made too  fly home in economy

TWEEEET and they’re off.

The battle of the Iberian Peninsula, Spain versus Portugal. This is a game to progress but also major bragging rights.

  1. I’ve got my swim trunks and goggles on for this one. Ready to judge the impending diving competition.

Fabio Coentrao really looks like John Harkes Jr.

Independent of my disdain for CR9, it’s too bad Portugal didn’t flame out in the group stage so that Carlos Queiroz could at least be thrown about as a potential USMNT coach. As it is, with European managers so often hired for joint WC and Euro campaigns I don’t see him leaving until 2012.

  4. Collective weight of hair gel = 20 pounds.

Puyol perms his hair…. you read it here first!*
    (*This is not true)

These no calls for Ronaldo are beginning to illustrate exactly why you shouldn’t dive, whine, complain and posture all the time.

7 of 8 quarterfinal spots filled by group winners…..ouch.

  9. Your 89th minute comment…it’s funny because we’ve been talking about that a lot on here lately.
