Quarterfinal – Spain versus Paraguay

Larissa Riquelme said she would run naked through the streets if Paraguay win it all...Go PARAGUAY!

PEEEEEEP PEEEP PEEP and Spain are through.

90:00 – Spain break with a 3-3. Pedro crosses to Villa who traps and shoots but it is masterfully saved by Villar.

88:00 – Casillas fumbles a routine shot and Santa Cruz is there for the rebound and Casillas makes amends by blocking it well.

83:00 – GOOOOOOAAAAAALLL. VILLA. Wow. Iniesta waltzes through the midfield from Iniesta, lays it off to Pedro whose shot hits the post but bounces out to an on rushing Villa, whose shot hits both posts before going in. That was lucky but how exciting. Spain 1 – Paraguay 0

77:00 – I think this game needs to go to penalties…just for fun.

75:00 – Xavi comes close with an outside shot. They need to do more of that. Pedro on for Spain.

73:00 – Internet seems to be singing (way to Jinx myself). Spain need to change it up some. Draw out the defenders with some outside shooting.

70:00 – Okay… attempt number 3. I just had to get on after that extraordinary series of events. Personally it was all well reffed! Minus the fact that when Paraguay took the penalty there were 5 Spaniards in the area. This game just woke up.

No more updates…internet is sucking up all my laptop juice.

45:00 – Del Bosque has a huge head. It’s up there with Shrek, Bruce Bochy and Don Nelson.

41:00 – Valdez is released and latches onto the ball, spins and fires back into the net. He was whistled for offside but replays shows he was clearly on. I thought it was a handball but it replays from other angles say it was a bad call.

39:00 – Paraguay venture forward quickly and their forward tries his best superman impression as he lays out high and far but cannot connect with his head.

32:00 – Spain are dominating possession now but like the internet connection I have, their play is poor.

22:00 – Paraguay missing 6 of their starts dues to cards and injuries but it seems to be doing them a world of good as they are the ones looking more dangerous.

16:00 – Paraguay attacking as if they all drank a case of redbull….each. Spain weathering the attack well and are making the occasional forays forward. What are in? Bizarro world?

12:00 – Apparently I deleted the Germany/Argentina post but i think we are back on track.

TWEEEET and they’re off. Posts might be sporadic as the interweb is a little slow now.

Will Paraguay park the bus? Will they attack?

Line ups

Paraguay: Villar, Veron, Alcaraz, Da Silva, Morel Rodriguez, Victor Caceres, Santana, Edgar Barreto, Riveros, Haedo Valdez, Cardozo.
Diego Barreto, Caniza, Julio Caceres, Bonet, Santa Cruz, Benitez, Vera, Torres, Barrios, Ortigoza, Bobadilla, Gamarra.
Spain: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Pique, Puyol, Capdevila, Busquets, Iniesta, Alonso, Xavi, Villa, Torres. Subs: Valdes, Albiol, Marchena, Fabregas, Mata, Arbeloa, Pedro, Llorente, Javi Martinez, Silva, Jesus Navas, Reina.

Well we’re back at the Elizabeth Street Brewery. Beer is flowing and the bacon scones are almost gone. Spain are heavily favored but the Paraguayan defense is stout and determined. Will Torres get off the mark or will be pull a Rooney or Messi?

I’m finding it very difficult to think of anything except go Paraguay … even though I want Spain to win.

I agree, but hate the idea of a possible Uruguay-Paraguay final.

I would like to see a Fabregas-Torres switch soon.

Casillas saves pk from Paraguay due to pique pull down. Villa on other end pulled down and pm awarded. Alonso to take and scores.

That was a crazy sequence. Also looked like it could have been encroachment on the Paraguay PK on Spain. Is that a retake since it was blocked?

70th minute. Spain playing through middle
Paraguay looking tired and I bet a change is coming.

Valdez was onside but Cardozo screwed it up by being between him and the linesman in an offside position. Ref can’t see the guy behind, assumes he’s offside too… Oops.

Cardozo was offside. End of story, doesn’t really matter that Valdez was on. Cardozo was active and offside that’s why the flag went up.

Gee, no one seemed to be for Argentina to go through on Maradona’s same promise. =)
Actually, I thought maybe Ms. Riquelme was Juan Riquelme’s WAG and this was some strange retaliation on her man’s behalf. Guess I missed part of of this WC’s fan lore.
Anyway, I don’t care who’s prepared to get nekkid on their behalf (even you just for me, Roque), I’m just relieved Paraguay didn’t go through.

Btw, anyone know offhand how long the matches are staying up on espn3.com? Sadly, what you get for free (with the right ISP) in the US costs 10 euros a day on this side of the atlantic, and I missed some matches I’d like to go back and see (the OT in the US v Ghana match for one… )= )
