Clint Mathis, All About Swagger

Long before Clint Dempsey was rapping and Benny Feilhaber was miming Jordan Sparks, Clint Mathis brought some serious flair and flavor, and an attention-grabbing haircut, to US Soccer.

Mathis is set to retire this Saturday when the Galaxy face the Galaticos of Real Madrid.

Mathis, thanks for the memories. A long time before your swagger is forgotten.

This is a sad day, indeed. I’ve always loved Mathis (all time Red Card leader in MLS) and I’m sorry to see him go. There was the end-to-end run as a MetroStar, the goal in WC 2002, and the occasionally ridiculous highlight shots in Germany. I remember watching the MLS Cup live last year, and kept thinking Mathis would be able to add a real threat to SLC’s attack. He came in and made a measurable difference in the attack. Threatening, unpredictable, from start to finish, Clint is one of our all-time greats.

  2. The watch tapping goal celebration is one of my all-time favorites.

  3. […] • Cletus Style: How about a little tribute to Clint Mathis and his national team service. If you’re going to the Brazil game and a) sporting a Mathis jersey, b) sporting a mohawk, c) sporting both or d) see someone who qualifies for (a), (b) or (c), send TSG a picture and we’ll post it later next week with another tribute to Mr. Swagger. Clint. Clint. I have to be honest, the mohawk (or any crazy do-unless your Japanese) is always embarrassing at that level and I remember thinking that he was jumping the shark with it. Which unfortunately he did with the injury soon after. Arena seemed to despise him (but Bruce seems to despise everyone below his massive soccer Id) and if you remember he pretty much squeezed him out of MNT service. Thought he was ready to set the world on fire after 02.
BTW- that entry ball from O’Brien was pure class. One of the most underrated pure ballers ever to wear the RWB. Miss you Johnny boy.
