Orange Slices! US vs. Mexico

Hello and welcome to game day!

Wait, weren’t we just here?

The United States finds themselves in Pasadena, CA Philadelphia, PA today against, again, Mexico.

Kickoff at Lincoln Financial Field is set for 9 p.m. ET.

Just a few weeks ago the US looked strong in the Gold Cup Final, up 2-0 and in the driver’s seat to rip open the invitation to the Confederation Cup in 2013. Mexico stormed back, the US faltered, and that invite–along with Bob Bradley as manager–became history.

Today starts the become just another chapter in the bitter Yanks vs. El Tri rivarly and the first chapter for new US coxswain Jurgen Klinsmann installed as USMNT “boss” a little less than two weeks ago.

Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m. PT. Pre-game starts at 5:30

English TV Broadcast: ESPN2

Spanish TV Broadcast: Univision, Web: ESPN3

Weather forecast:

Weather? Well you know what they say about Philadelphia, right? 80s predicted for the daily high, 70 or so around game time. (BTW, Philadelphia? One of my favorite cities. Really nice people. No joke.)

Surf forecast: If you wanted to drive two hours, you could cart out a 10-foot log to Long Beach Island (personal fave) or  Asbury Park (merely closer) if you wanted catch some ankle-slappers.

Update: Will Chivas say Adu?: A report from Ives Galarcep that Freddy Adu may be headed to Chivas as a DP. Interesting…developing… (Note: We are actually slated to speak with Adu’s agent today. Let see if we can gain anything.)

Update: The new Bonanza!: MLS reaching agreement with NBC and NBC Networks on a 3-year TV deal including 6 games a year to broadcast on NBC. Smart move; excellent move.

A little bit of “whew…”: A reminder, no Chicharito this time out.

Talking a little Turkey: The last time at the Linc, the US backline got blitzed by Arda Turan who Colin Kazim-Richards would find leaking out on the left wing. It was the only score on Turkey for the day, but it highlighted Turan’s nastiness.

Want to took about an absolute steal of this transfer season? Galatasaray is set to sell Turan to Atletico Madrid (you swindlers!) for a mere $12M price tag. Heist!

The light of day: Three World Cup veterans Ricardo Clark, Jose Torres and DaMarcus Beasley are making their first appearances–in over a year–for the USMNT since the World Cup.

Mexerman?: Nine of the 22 players play in either the Bundesliga or the Primera. Wow.

It won’t be “Morgan”: Cue the debate over who becomes captain. Will be interesting to see the interactions of the veterans with the absence of Coach Sweats.

Hey, that’s me!: Looking for possible surprise starters? We’ll go with Beckerman in the midfield (possible) or Shea at leftback (I’ve got an itch!)

20-8-6 and 25-9-9: Jurgen Klinsmann’s records with the German National Team (the former) and Bayern Munich (the latter), his two head coaching stints. Not too shabby.

YouTubing: Speaking of Klinsmania…

Not to be outdone, Thomas Dooley, guest assistant head coach on Jorge Campos no less!:

More to come. It’s game day!

In the Dooley video (~0:21) the kid has a vuvuzela haha

I think Brek Shea at LB is far more likely than Beckerman making it on (maybe even as a sub). That training video released by US Soccer yesterday showed Shea playing in that spot. I think Pearce starts at LB, but Shea comes on to start giving him minutes.

God I hope Beckerman isn’t playing. I know RSL fans love him, but he’s so far from a natural athlete… the fact he’s in the player pool is always an unwelcome reality check for me.

  4. I feel partially rickrolled on that first video.

“Hey That’s ME” I almost spit my coffee out. Could you imagine Beckerman walking up to the wall next to the coaches office a la Rudy to see who the starters are. As he peruses with his finger down the list he comes to his name and loudly exclaims “HEY EVERYBODY THAT”S ME!”

Or better yet, he is going down the list a la Austin Powers: Goldmember and see’s he is a finalist for the International Man of Mystery award and starts laughing hysterically.

I think it should go more in the Legally Blonde direction where he scrolls down the list, see’s his name, and shouts “ME!!! YES!!!!”

In honor of our new German coach, you have to read Michael Lewis on Germany. Yes, I know–Michael Lewis can and should be read on just about any subject he chooses to opine about. But still: you get to learn about the national German obsession with shit.

Also for links….here’s a rumor that Chivas USA is thinking about Freddy Adu, DP:

Goff of WaPo has the same rumor. On one hand, Robin Fraser is the right sort of coach to get the most out of a player like Freddy. On the other hand, Fraser already has an All-Star at Freddy’s position in Nick LaBrocca. On the third hand, there are the physical-league issues.

No disagreement here. The only Michael Lewis debate is whether he is the Messi (greatest of our time) or the Pele (greatest of all time) at writing these in depth, brilliant magazine articles on a wide variety of topics.

For those that only know him from his books, IMO his Vanity Fair articles are much much better.

Now there is something I can concur with: the scatological German mind. Colonics for the whole team!

Thank god for the longer legs of today’s team sports jerseys. I don’t ever need to see that much of Juergen Klinsmann’s legs.

Is Danny Coyle’s strictly 21+? I’d love to bring my 2 little ladies to watch the game with me tonight.
